  • Goedhuis, November 2018

Named after the small stream La Petite Vouge that runs through this vineyard located on the north side of the Clos, wedged up towards Musigny. This is a cuvée that should never be ignored. Hints of Morello cherry, full of sweet dark berry fruit flavours, it is a rounded, harmonious wine. Structured and complex, the wonderful flavours remain in the palate for a very long time.

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 89-91

The 2017 Vougeot Les Petits Vougeot 1er Cru has a taut, tightly wound bouquet of black cherry, bilberry and subtle violet aromas that gradually open with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a chunky, quite masculine entry and fine grip, but a little backward and tight on the finish. Like a couple of other crus, I would just like a little more persistence here. 2021 - 2030

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 89-92

An ultra-elegant nose offers up really pretty aromas of violet, plum, dark currant and a pretty array of spice elements. The sleek, intense and beautifully well-detailed flavors evidence a youthfully austere, compact and surprisingly short and slightly clipped finish. I attribute the difficult finish to an elevated level of gas and thus this should achieve its usual quality level. Drink 2027+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2019, Score: 90-92

The 2017 Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeot offers up notes of plums, ripe berries, dark chocolate and rose petal, displaying darker fruit tones than is typical of this frequently red-fruited and ethereal cuvée. Perhaps it was just the day I tasted it. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, nicely concentrated and fine-boned, with succulent acids and a precise, mineral finish. A Chambolle in spirit, it's a perennial value in the Hudelot-Noëllat portfolio.

  • Decanter, November 2018, Score: 95

Not old by the standards of this domaine's other vineyard holdings - it was planted in 1980 - this 0.5ha piece of Les Petits Vougeots always seems to produce a delightfully scented, hedonistic Pinot in the hands of Charles van Canneyt. It's crunchy, juicy and vibrant, with chalky minerality and enticing raspberry and red cherry fruit. Drink 2023-2029

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Vougeot

Unlike the other predominant Côte de Nuits appellations, Vougeot's main appellation is its onlygrand cru vineyard, Clos de Vougeot. It is by far the largest grand cru of the area totalling over 50 hectares with over 40 owners rumoured to own vines. As a result, its vineyards run from the flat, clay-dominated valley floor to the well-drained, venerated sloped hillsides suggesting that its quality ending on where it is grown. As a result, it is often the least valued of the grand crus and can offer excellent value, particularly in good vintages where ripeness has been attained.
