Sauzet’s Encégnières is very restrained in 2018 with a taut saline mineral character and hints of lemon zest. A firm central core develops into an appealing nutty finish. This will open up with age in bottle.

    The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Enseigneres, which sees 15% new oak, has an appealing bouquet with touches of walnut and hazelnut lending a Meursault-like character. The well-balanced palate features clementine and light mango notes. Quite linear and strict, demonstrating fine precision toward the finish. This will be a "correct" Chassagne-Montrachet. 2022 - 2032

    A barely perceptible whiff of the exotic can be found on the white peach, petrol, lemon zest and soft rosemary oil nuances. There is both good volume and energy to the appealingly textured medium weight flavors that possess reasonably good detail on the delicious and balanced finish. This is a quality Chassagne villages that needs to develop a bit more depth, but it should be capable of that if allowed time. Drink 2024+ Outstanding

    A light lemon streak in the pale colour. More subdued on the nose but with a suggestion of density. Which indeed it delivers especially at the back of the palate. Solid white fruit with very good texture.

Region

Chassagne Montrachet

The white wines of Chassagne Montrachet can be difficult to distinguish from Puligny. At their most typical they are slightly fleshier and more hedonistic, but are often just as mineral and refined making the two almost inseparable. When distinguishable, they offer notes of honeysuckle, lime blossom and honey. Many have become quite approachable when young. It is larger than Puligny with vineyards totalling over 330 hectares. Though it shares both the grand cru vineyards of Le Montrachet and Bâtard Montrachet, it has sole ownership of the miniscule Criots Bâtard Montrachet. Similar to Puligny, Chassagne also grows Pinot Noir, which can be austere when young. A small amount of red Chassagne is also made.
