  • Goedhuis, February 2020

The steep south facing granite based slopes of Cornas are perfect for producing superb examples of the Syrah grape variety. The focus on style is less on breadth and more on mineral direction. This is a wine with great life and energy, characters of spice, dark liquorice and bitter chocolate. A very pure direct style, finishing with flavours of sweet black fruits.

  • Wine Advocate, February 2020, Score: 92-94

Gentle notes of crushed stone accent red-currant fruit on the nose of the 2018 Cornas Domaine de Saint Pierre. There's a sense of tension in this medium to full-bodied wine, which walks a tightrope of ripeness to yield a wine that's velvety and rich yet fresh and vibrant on the finish.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, February 2020, Score: 92-95

The 2018 Cornas Domaine de Saint Pierre could turn out to be a real superstar, and it’s an incredibly impressive barrel sample. Lots of dark berry fruits, toasted spice, and cured meat notes give way to a full-bodied Cornas that has ripe tannins, subtle background oak, and a great finish.

One of the most recognised producers in the Rhône Valley, Jaboulet was first created in the early 1800s. Up until a couple of years ago, it remained family owned. Over time, it established its flagship Hermitage La Chapelle as one of the top wines of the region ranking it along Chave Hermitage and Guigal single-vineyard Côte-Rôties in quality. In the mid-late 1990s, quality became irregular due to the death of Gérard Jaboulet and other internal issues. In early 2006, the Jaboulet family sold their heralded domaine to the Frey family, owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux and major investors in Billecart-Salmon in Champagne. Since this change of hands, investment has been foremost - contributing to new winemaking facilities as well as creating a dramatic and imposing aging cellar sculpted out of an ancient quarry, a space that might put a superhero's headquarters to shame. Their goal is to put Jaboulet's range of wines back on the collector's map. Since their takeover, the results have been noticed. Even Robert Parker has stated, "I fully expect quality will dramatically soar at Jaboulet (just as it has at Château La Lagune in Bordeaux).." (The Wine Advocate, April 2007).Read less

Region

Cornas

This most southerly appellation has long been lost in the shadows by the limelight of its more glamorous neighbours. It has suffered from an archaic (and entrenched) reputation of producing tannic, dense wines that need many years to come around. Yet for a long time, this has not been the case. Many of Cornas' wines are produced from slopes of excellent reputation, known for their well drained steep terrains as well as their sheltered exposures from cold northern winds. Due to this micro-climate of sorts, it usually produces riper wine than the more northern appellations in colder vintages. Cornas is one of the most underestimated appellations which can at times challenge Hermitage.
