The enviable aspect of these south east facing vines allows for excellent ripening as is evident from the charming clementine aromas. Very harmonious, this has a gracious breadth. There is a pleasing line of lemon sherbet on the finish, which refreshes the palate and gives life and excitement to the wine.

The 2019 Saint-Aubin Derrière Chez Edouard 1er Cru has a complex bouquet with green apples and a light, almost algae-like note, which probably sounds more pejorative than it is. The palate is well balanced with very precise mineral-driven citrus fruit that gains weight towards the finish. This fans out wonderfully and it will age for many years. Superb. 2023-2038

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2020, Score: 91-94

Pale lemon and lime, I am not picking out too much on the nose, though this is very nicely balanced on the palate, white fruit, but on a bed of limestone and lifted at the back with additional fresh fruit energy. Deceptively quiet at first, but there is a lot going on behind. 4 stars

Region

Saint Aubin

Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
