  • Goedhuis, December 2020

Beaux Monts sits amongst the aristocratic elite of Grand Cru vineyards in Vosne Romanée, close to Echézeaux and is one of Etienne’s favourites in his fine armoury of appellations. This year I missed seeing his twinkle as he serves the wine from the barrel, but I am sure it is there. Lots of dark black fruits, with a touch of fresh tobacco leaf. This is so elegant. It is softly harmonious, but full of life. The tannins are controlled and equally fine, with a wonderful lasting finish.

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a little more amplitude on the nose compared to the Aux Brûlées, delivering captivating scents of dark cherries, cassis, crushed violets and a discreet touch of peppermint. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, pitch-perfect acidity and a little savoriness toward the finish, which fans out with cool confidence. This is a superb Vosne-Romanée destined to give 20-plus years of pleasure. Drink 2025 - 2050

This is a densely appointed and hugely impressive wine with so much power and poise it is amazing. With an extra dimension of ripeness, this brings extraordinary exoticism to the fore and it suits the depth and stature of this regal vineyard. A cosmic Pinot experience, this is a brilliant expression of this wine and, ignoring the fact that it is overtly exotic, it is an immensely collectable wine.

  • Jasper Morris MW, Npvember 2020, Score: 94-96

The magical imperial purple colour is a promising start. The bouquet offers a little touch of sandalwood then a perfectly balanced intense concentration of fruit from the start on the palate right through to the end. So complete. It is a little richer than some years but all is perfectly in place. Some sweet plums as well as a lively dark raspberry. 4 Star

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
