    58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot An absolute joy to taste in 2020, this fine property lying just south of the appellation of Margaux, has all the gloss and svelte sophistication of its neighbouring commune. Very polished aromas of sweet dark berry fruits and a touch of wild brambles. The flavours are so nuanced, dark and brooding, with a touch of tar and liquorice, and beautifully sweet. A granular line of tannins on the finish give a layer of tension and longevity. A wine of note this year.

    Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Cantemerle reveals a great intensity and purity of blackcurrant cordial, stewed plums and black raspberry scents, plus hints of dried Provence herbs, Indian spices and woodsmoke. The medium-bodied palate delivers approachable chewy tannins and just enough freshness to support the savory-laced black fruit flavors, finishing with an herbal lift. Drink 2024-2036

    This is a very long and very even wine with fairly combative tannins and a dry finish, but I very much like the fruit tone and the controlled delivery, such that the finish rolls on for minutes. More closed than many, hence the ‘+’ in my score, this is a lovely effort and one which will provide twenty years of reliable service with ease.

    Dark purple crimson with black core. Distinctive aroma that brings together not just cassis and damson but also the more lifted scent of Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. Gently leafy (not unripe) and with a light floral note like peony. Really pretty. On the palate, darker fruited but also with a marked dark-chocolate-like sweetness. Smooth, chewy tannins. Lots of flavour and a fruit and oak sweetness on the finish (though of course it is as dry wine), as well as the more savoury side from the dry tannins. Well integrated even now. (JH) 13.1%.     Dark, juicy cherries, bitter chocolate, savory herbs and a touch of espresso start the wine off. Medium-bodied, bright and energetic, with a lot of lift in the red fruits on the palate, this will age and develop nicely.

Region

Haut-Médoc

The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
