  • Goedhuis, November 2021

This is the apple of Bastien’s eye on the estate, it is his favourite vineyard and favourite wine. In 2020 it is easy to see why, it really is a standout wine. A touch smoky on the nose with characters of vanilla pod and brioche. A wine of so many flavours, a mass of floral white fruits, which remains lively thanks to the saline freshness. Perfectly composed, with huge balance, it manages to possess both grace and power. Statuesque in every way.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot Les Fairendes 1er Cru is perfumed and fragrant on the nose, with yellow plum, broom, crushed stone and light fennel aromas. The 2020 shows wonderful delineation and supremely well-integrated oak. The palate has a slight reduction on the entry, though it is in sync with the wine. It offers a keen thread of acidity, citrus-driven with tension and vibrancy all the way through to the saliva-inducing finish. This is in a different league to the samples that I tasted from barrel. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

As with many Burgundian families, there are many offshoots, the result of generations of intermarriage with other famous local names. Our latest new discovery stems from Fernand Coffinet, whose daughter Laura met Philippe Duvernay from Rully, to create the exciting under-the-radar estate of Domaine Coffinet-Duvernay. Their 7 hectares of vines are split between village, eight different Premiers Crus and a gem of a parcel of Grand Cru.Read less

Region

Chassagne Montrachet

The white wines of Chassagne Montrachet can be difficult to distinguish from Puligny. At their most typical they are slightly fleshier and more hedonistic, but are often just as mineral and refined making the two almost inseparable. When distinguishable, they offer notes of honeysuckle, lime blossom and honey. Many have become quite approachable when young. It is larger than Puligny with vineyards totalling over 330 hectares. Though it shares both the grand cru vineyards of Le Montrachet and Bâtard Montrachet, it has sole ownership of the miniscule Criots Bâtard Montrachet. Similar to Puligny, Chassagne also grows Pinot Noir, which can be austere when young. A small amount of red Chassagne is also made.
