  • Goedhuis, November 2021

The Javillier parcel on this great Grand Cru hillside faces south and in 2020 highlights the exuberance and opulence that can be a hallmark of Corton Charlemagne. Intensely creamy, with characters of vanilla pod, coffee bean and a touch of nutmeg spice. A total fruit salad of flavours, the body and depth of exciting flavours coat the mouth, full of class. This is just excitement in a glass!

  • Burghound, June 2022, Score: 92-95

A markedly more restrained nose grudgingly reveals its array of green apple, lemon rind, wet stone and a variety of spice wisps. There is outstanding size, weight and power to the intensely stony big-bodied flavors that conclude in a compact, tightly wound, very dry and youthfully austere finale. This possesses excellent development potential that should allow it to repay at least a decade of keeping. With that said, it's not so backward that it couldn't be approached after 5 or so years. Drink: 2030+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18.5+

I have never been a massive fan of Javillier’s Corton, but it is singing from the rooftops in 2020. Lovely and harmonious with great lift and length, this is a sensual style and one which is likely to appeal to all-comers thanks to its succulence and length.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 92-95

Recently racked, not yet on finings, so a little bit unclear to the eye as the lees still in suspension. Something of everything on the nose, a touch of tangerine, a little bit of biscuit barrel. A significant weight of fruit, a good thread of mineral acidity, a little more opulence in fruit profile. A little higher in alcohol perhaps.

Like all great winemakers he has his own views as to how wines should be made and the benefits of ageing both in cask and bottle and everything is thought out meticulously with this in mind. He makes wonderfully textbook wines, which for us are the most perfect reflection of the wines of Meursault. His wines have the natural exuberance that one expects from this the most exotic of the three famous white Côte de Beaune villages, whilst having a complexity of texture that only the very finest vineyards and producers ever seem to produce.Read less

Corton Charlemagne

As legend goes, Charlemagne, king of the Franks, ordered Chardonnay planted in the vineyard of Corton during his reign in the 8th century so as he would not stain his light-coloured beard during moments of great thirst. This may be mere romantic fallacy, but what cannot be denied is the exceptional quality of this Grand Cru appellation in Aloxe Corton in the Cote de Beaune.
