At the northern end of the Gevrey Grands Crus, Ruchottes is divided into two distinct sections; the Clos Ruchottes, which is owned entirely by Domaine Armand Rousseau, and the lower part of the vineyard, which looks like a rectangular notch taken out of neighbouring Mazis. Hailing from lower Ruchottes, Château de Marsannay’s vines are planted into highly rocky soils dating from the Bathonian period. Dense and brooding on the nose, this wine needs time in the glass to show its interwoven aromas of black cherry, black forest fruits, savoury oak spice and black pepper. On the palate, this is a hugely concentrated, tightly coiled Pinot that has a powerful, muscular presence. Firm yet velvety tannins coral the dense black fruit, whilst a vibrant, mineral-driven acidity brings energy and verve. A sophisticated wine that needs time to unfurl its true potential.

It is a substantial property, comprising 40 hectares, of which 28 are in Marsannay and the remainder are spread throughout prime locations in the Côte de Nuits and as far south as Puligny Montrachet. With the guidance of Stéphane Follin-Arbelet of Château de Meursault, new technical director Sylvain Pabiot has been implementing exciting changes at the property. They are currently in the process of converting to organic vineyard management and Sylvain has instigated a more delicate approach in the winery for the Pinots.Read less

Ruchottes Chambertin

Ruchottes Chambertin is a red wine AOC and Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy’s Gevrey Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits. The Ruchottes Chambertin vineyard is situated on the upper slopes on well-draining, stony soil with a thin layer of limestone-rich soil which encourages the vines to grow deep root systems. The resulting wines are fragrant and light in colour but concentrated in flavour.
