  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

The Bize family own a hectare of this Premier Cru, which borders the commune of Pernand-Vergelesses, and their holding is right the top of the vineyard where the soils are pebbly and free-draining. The 2023 shows vibrant notes of sun-ripened raspberries and red cherries, with an appealing overlay of crushed pink peppercorn. Deliciously pure fruit gives a sensation of summer berry sweetness, supported by fine-grained tannins with an almost polished texture. Bright acidity brings freshness, tension and drive to the palate. Already very well knit together, there is a wealth of potential for further development with careful cellar aging.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 91-93

The 2023 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fournaux 1er Cru has a crisp and precise bouquet with fine mineralité. Like a few of Bize's reds this year it is quite understated, but gradually finds its voice. The palate is well balanced and detailed, shaped by its stems with touches of black pepper and Japanese nori on the finish. Delightful.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 16

Smells like playground fruit juice! Tastes of pecans and strawberry juice. Almost crazy simple and yet it’s not. Tannins like curly brackets and well-brewed tea. Something a little wild? It has a certain tang, but unlike the Bize Vergelesses, no sign of hamsters here. (TC)

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 89-92

An even mid purple. A clean non reductive nose, but not yet showing its fruit much. A fresher structure at the back, more evident tannins but adequate fruit to match them, and a burst of cherry-raspberry fruit to finish. The second winter will refine the tannins.

Producer

Domaine Simon Bize et Fils

Domaine Simon Bize is a substantial estate by Burgundy standards, with 22 hectares mainly in the appellation of Savigny Lès Beaune and two fine grand cru parcels in Corton Charlemagne and Latricières Chambertin. It is now under the careful management of Chisa, the late Patrick Bize’s wife, and Marielle Grivot, Patrick’s sister. They like to continue his practice of whole bunch fermentation and gentle handling of the fruit during the vinification process. The result is always very stylish wines, which possess the sweetness of fruit and subtle core of tannins, which are such a character of the wines of Savigny.

Region

Savigny-lès-Beaune

The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
