  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 91

Pale lemon colour. The bouquet has a little more precision than Les Combes, staying in the apple orchard register, I like the interplay of fruit and acidity on the palate, with the citrus wash frequently to be found this year, and this is more persistent.

The Lamy-Pillot family has half a hectare of this prestigious Premier Cru, sitting on the border of Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Le Chaumée. The white stone fruit and jasmine scent intertwine perfectly alongside the herbal mint and thyme characters. This is so inviting, with notes of pannacotta and guernsey cream, and a rewarding lift of zesty freshness on the finish.

Domaine Lamy-Pillot

The Lamy and Pillot names are VIPs in the Côte de Beaune. We are so excited about this great new addition to our portfolio; based in Chassagne, Domaine Lamy-Pillot was founded by René Lamy, whose brother Hubert Lamy’s estate is a St Aubin favourite. René cut his teeth at the famed Duc de Magenta estate, the most significant owners of Le Montrachet vineyard, before focusing his full attention on his own vineyards in the mid-1970s. Today this fine 15-hectare estate is run by his two daughters and their husbands: Florence and Sebastien focusing in the vineyards and winery, whilst Karine and her husband Daniel look after the commercial business. Florence and Sebastien’s preferred style is for wines of thoughtful restraint. Subtlety is the name of the game here, and they are a joy to taste. The white wines undergo a 48-hour period of cold settling in stainless steel tank on arrival from the vineyard, after which the juice is transferred to barrels (approximately 15% new oak) for the fermentations. Bâtonnage is practiced judiciously, providing some lees texture complexity, but the overall character is wines of great energy and parcelled identity. They are also an exciting estate for red wines, valuing the village’s historical reputation for making excellent Pinot Noir with a particularly fine holding in the well respected Morgeot vineyard. Within their 15 hectares they make 19 different cuvées and we are delighted to introduce the domaine with four wonderful wines from the 2022 vintage, highlighting their depth and style.

Region

Saint Aubin

Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
