  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 88

The 1998 Pichon-Baron has a straightforward bouquet of blackberry and graphite aromas mixed with leather and a touch of tomato vine. It just feels a little conservative compared to others. The palate is medium-bodied and quite foursquare, featuring blackberry, raspberry and a touch of iodine; I find a little greenness coming through toward the finish that detracts from its class. This could be better, but the 1998 plays it too safe. Tasted at the Pichon-Baron vertical at the château. 2018-2030

  • Neal Martin, May 2018, Score: 91

The 1998 Pichon Baron has a deep garnet core with just light bricking on the rim. It has a pleasant blackberry, fig and cedar-scented bouquet, hints of fresh mint coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin that have clearly mellowed over the last two decades. This is not a complex Pichon Baron however, it is well balanced with light tobacco and subtle meaty notes infusing the black fruit, perhaps with just a touch of rustic towards the finish. Drink now and over the next 15 years. Tasted at the château. 2018-2030

  • Robert Parker, April 1999, Score: 87-88

If it were not for the ferocious tannin that compresses its personality and gives it a certain leanness, this 1998 would have merited a higher rating. Other than the questionable tannin level, it is a well-made, dark purple-colored wine with aromas and flavors of cassis and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied and muscular, but backward, tight, and abrupt, this should turn out to be a very good to excellent effort, but the tannin level is worrisome. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2017.

  • Robert Parker, April 2000, Score: 89-91

This wine has improved considerably during its evolution in cask. The saturated black/purple color is accompanied by jammy cassis, licorice, dried herb, and toasty aromas. The mid-palate has filled in since it was tasted last year. Full-bodied, with sweeter, integrated tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015.

  • Robert Parker, April 2001, Score: 90

A definitive Pauillac, the dense purple-colored 1998 Pichon-Baron offers up a sweet bouquet of licorice, smoke, asphalt, blackberries, and creme de cassis. In the mouth, the wine is elegant rather than full-blown, with medium body, sweet fruit, nice texture on the attack and mid-palate, and moderate tannin in the long finish. No, this is an outstanding effort. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020.

Producer

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

Along with Pichon Lalande, this estate was only one of two Pauillacs to be classified as a secondgrowth in 1855. They have rivalled each other ever since. However, Pichon Baron has remained inthe shadow of its more illustrious neighbour often enabling it to provide good value for money.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
