In the glass, concentrated fruits quiver under the surface. These smouldering dark fruits are wrapped in savoury herbs, minerals and exotic spice. A wonderfully fragrant style, this 2018 is highly aromatic and captivates the senses. Its seductive blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot delivers a powerful character that totally transfixes with its astounding complexity. It contains a tapestry of flavours: ripe blueberries, red and black currants, mocha, dark Peruvian chocolate and black cherry are woven into umami, truffle, turmeric root, granite and graphite minerals. We love the mouth-watering salinity on the finish and arresting freshness. The multi-faceted textures on the palate are fascinating. Silky smooth yet mouth coating with grainy ripe, sweet tannins that flow into an imposing and powerful structure. The combination makes for an ethereal yet chiselled wine that is truly mesmerising.

  • Antonio Galloni, November 2020, Score: 99

The 2018 IX Estate is dense, powerful and brooding. Inky dark fruit, gravel, smoke, spice infuse the IX Estate with tremendous character. All of the savory intensity that is typical of this site comes through, and yet the richness of the fruit is palpable. Readers will find an exciting, viscerally thrilling wine that hits all the right notes. In 2018, the IX Estate is truly lights out. It is also the darkest and most concentrated of the three Cabernet Sauvignon wines... This is an utterly magnificent set of wines from Colgin. Drink 2024-2043.

  • Wine Advocate, November 2020, Score: 100

The 2018 IX Estate is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Very deep purple-black colored, it needs a little coaxing to reveal earth and mineral scents of iron ore, tilled soil, forest floor and truffles with ripe red and black currants, kirsch, Black Forest cake and mulberries plus nuances of tar, lilacs and Sichuan pepper. Full-bodied and built like a brick house, the palate has a rock-solid frame of firm, grainy tannins and exhilarating freshness supporting the taut, muscular fruit. Mineral and savory accents linger long into the epic finish. A thought-provoking, pensive, mesmerizing wine. Drink 2024-2064.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, January 2021, Score: 100

Another perfect wine, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon IX Estate is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with 14% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, all from the estate on Pritchard Hill. A monster of a wine that needs serious bottle age, it reveals a dense purple hue as well as a mineral-drenched bouquet of pure crème de cassis, charcoal, spring flowers, tobacco, and earth. Just incredible on the palate, it’s full-bodied and flawlessly balanced, with remarkable purity and a finish that won’t quit. Cabernet – or red wine for that matter – doesn’t get any better! It needs a solid 5-7 years of bottle age. but this legendary wine will see its 50th birthday in fine form. Drink 2026-2068.

The 2011 IX Estate is the softest of the three Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines in this range from Colgin, but there is plenty of breath and power, too. Sweet red cherry, iron, dried herbs, gravel, licorice and menthol lend class and personality to this beautifully articulated mountain red. The 2011 is showing so well today. It has enough freshness to drink well for another decade plus. Drink 2021-2031.

2019 was a late-ripening vintage at Colgin’s IX Estate on Pritchard Hill. Much was picked during the third week of October, allowing winemaker Allison Tauzier to perform a little more co-fermentation. The 2019 IX Estate is opaque purple-black in color, needing a little coaxing to unlock notions of blackberry preserves, baked plums and crème de cassis, plus hints of pencil lead, star anise, wild sage and Indian spices, leading to a fragrant waft of lavender. Built like a brick house, the opulent, full-bodied palate is perfectly framed by super firm, exquisitely ripe tannins and a fantastic acid line to give lift throughout the long earthy finish. So finely knit together, this multi-layered, seamless beauty is just breathtaking.

Ripe cherries, plums and flowers on the nose. Orange peel, too, together with hints of thyme, bay leaf and sage. Medium-to full-bodied, incredibly deep and fresh, with fine tannins that carry you deep down into the finish. It tells you its great, but makes you spend time in order to understand it. Reminds me of the 1990 Latour. Try after 2027.

  • Vinous, October 2021, Score: 98

The 2019 IX Estate is supremely elegant and polished. All the strong mineral and savory accents typical of this site are present, but they are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. Bright and chiseled, the 2019 is focused and full of character right out of the gate. Dried herb, tobacco, chocolate and mineral accents lend nuance throughout. My impression is that the 2019 is still recovering from its recent bottling. It is already stellar, but it will be even more stellar in time.

  • Decanter, November 2022, Score: 95

The IX Estate merges the merits of Tychson Hill and Cariad. The lush and perfumed nose displays brambly, blackberry aromas with a hint of mocha. The attack is fresh and limpid, with good acidity and ripe tannins that give texture and cut. It may lack a little drive, but it's elegant and fine-grained, with a balanced and persistent finish.

The 2017 IX Estate really speaks to the essence of this site high above Lake Hennessey. Rich, ample and full-bodied, with tremendous mineral and savory intensity, the 2017 has so much to offer. Graphite, menthol, licorice, espresso, spice, black cherry and plum emerge with some reluctance, but it is the wine's explosive energy that stands out most. The 2017 is a potent, brooding wine that clearly demands patience. Today, its mountain structure is especially evident.

The 2017 IX Estate is composed of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Opaque purple-black colored, the nose is quite closed and shy to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal freshly crushed blackberries, mulberries and blackcurrants plus suggestions of dusty soil, bouquet garni, pencil lead and cast-iron pan with gentle wafts of sandalwood, cardamom, rare beef and black tea. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house, strutting incredibly ripe yet super firm tannins, and it has lovely, uplifting freshness to help define all those black fruit and savory layers, finishing with epic length. Needs time, but this should turn out to be incredibly nuanced and long lived! Drink 2025-2060.

  • Wine Advocate, October 2016, Score: 98+

From their steep hillside vineyards on Pritchard Hill, the 2014 Proprietary Red IX Estate is an old-fashioned Médoc blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, but with some Cabernet Franc (rarely seen in the Médoc these years) as well as Merlot and Petit Verdot. Striking aromatics of violets, forest floor, loamy soil nuances, blueberry, black raspberry and blackberry soar from the glass of this spectacular 2014. The acidity seems reasonable but on the lower side, the texture is magnificent, and the overall purity and equilibrium flawless. This is a wine pushing, even demanding, a three-digit score once again, but I’m holding back – at least for now. This magnificent effort from Colgin should drink beautifully for 25-30 years. Drink 2016-2046.

Gorgeous aromas of lean pencil, blackcurrants and raspberries. So perfumed and glorious. Full-bodied, chewy and intense with great length and intensity. Silky and muscular yet agile and energetic. Needs three to four years to resolve some of the tannins. Better in 2020.

  • Vinous, October 2016, Score: 97

A huge, dark wine, the 2014 IX Estate exudes full-throttle intensity and richness, with big mountain tannins that give the wine its overall shape and feel. Huge swaths of mineral-drenched fruit make a strong first impression as this dark, brooding wine gradually shows its personality. Graphite, sage and grilled herbs envelop a core of intense fruit. A wine of volume and breadth, the 2014 IX Estate is going to take at least a few years to come into its own. Drink 2022-2034.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, February 2023, Score: 98

The 2014 IX Estate is a normal blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. From a consistently warm, moderate growing season, this has a layered, forward style in its ripe black and blue fruits as well as loamy earth, tobacco leaf, and graphite, with perfectly integrated background oak. Full-bodied, supple, and utterly seamless on the palate, it’s another wine from Tauziet that delivers sensational richness and depth with no sensation of weight or heaviness. Drink bottles any time over the coming two decades. Drink 2023-2043.
