En Primeur | Domaine Justin Girardin

The Girardin family and their wines embody the true values of a classic Burgundian domaine. The family history dates to 1570, and their vineyard holding of 17 hectares represents a sizeable estate in Burgundian terms, reflecting the family’s standing and position in the southern end of the Côte de Beaune. The young and extremely talented Justin, now in his early 30s, assumed total control in 2015 and his wines just get better and better with each year.  Justin’s policy is for minimum levels of intervention in the winery, all made possible by his meticulously attentive vineyard management techniques. He is a man of the soil, and describes himself as a winegrower, not a winemaker. Most of his time is spent in the vineyard, working with each of their parcels and constantly adjusting to what they see and feel on the vines.

The nose displays a sweet, crystalline fruit, with notes of lemon zest and mango, while the palate has delicious flavours of ripe yellow peach and lemon. Fresh and lively, this is such an easily enjoyable wine.

    This is a fresh and fruity style of Meursault: jasmine and rose dance on the nose. This has a delightful weight as it is creamy and rich without being too cloying or intense. Lemon, apple and apricot combine on the palate with hints on pain au raisin, ending with a fresh acidity to balance the fruit. An approachable wine giving much youthful pleasure.

    Pale colour with a light green tint. Fresh cool style. Lime blossom too in the fruit. One could hope for a little more body in a Meursault and this starts to show through towards the back of the palate where the white orchard fruit develops. Drink from 2027-2029.

    From a parcel that sits high on the slope, just above the Premier Cru vineyard sites, Les Clous is defined by its limestone soil and revered for balancing complexity with approachability. There is great density of ripe peach and nectarine fruit with whisps of smokiness and baked apple tart aromas. A divine, silky mouthfeel with a steely energy on the finish.

    Just two barrels. Pale lime green again. A little bit of hillside limestone comes into play and there is some weight of slightly riper fruit further back on the palate. It may be that the recent bottling has tightened these wines up. In the end, some tendrils of honeysuckle. Drink from 2027-2030.

    Les Peuillets is the final Premier Cru vineyard before arriving at the slopes of Beaune. Here the warm, sandy soils produce an affable style of wine and Girardin is the master of such expression. A brilliant ruby-red colour with gorgeous aromatics of red cherry, red plum and jasmine. On the palate freshly crushed cranberry and red cherry are complemented by cedar notes and a gentle clove spice. Impeccably smooth and ripe tannins. This will drink wonderfully young but will improve.

    A sandy soil vineyard which is happy with the moisture of the 2024 vintage. Mid crimson, delightfully perfumed, unforced, low key but very nicely made with some length. Drink from 2028-2031.

    High up on the southern boundary of the Santenay appellation, this is a relatively cool vineyard which produced exceptional wine in 2024. A crimson colour with very ripe berry character. Red cherry, cranberries, and a touch of fruits of the forest with a smoky edge. Suede like tannins are long lived and intertwine with sweet fruit on the finish.

    Clear mid ruby, less dense than some. A little oak showing but the fruit can resist. Pure red fruit here, no great intensity, but all the fruit is in the right place and an attractive finish. Drink from 2028-2031

Pricing

  • IN BOND prices exclude UK Duty and VAT. Wines can be purchased In Bond for storage in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse, or for export to non-EU countries. Duty and VAT must be paid before delivery can take place.

  • RETAIL prices include UK Duty and VAT. Wines for UK delivery can only be purchased this way.

Additional Information

  • Duty Paid wines have been removed from Bond and cannot subsequently be returned to Bond.  VAT is payable on Duty Paid wines. These wines must remain Duty Paid but can be purchased as such for storage subject to VAT.

  • En Primeur wines can only be purchased In Bond. On arrival in the UK these wines can either be stored In Bond in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse or delivered directly to you. When you decide to take delivery, Duty and VAT at the prevailing rate become payable.

    If you buy for storage, your wines will be transferred automatically on arrival.

  • EP: En Primeur. These wines are lying in the Domaines’ cellars until shipping. They can only be purchased In Bond.
