En Primeur | Domaine Simon Bize

Domaine Simon Bize is a substantial estate by Burgundian standards, with 22 hectares mainly in the appellation of Savigny Lès Beaune including six very diverse 1ers Crus and two fine Grands Crus parcels in Corton Charlemagne and Latricières Chambertin. Just like DRC, the domaine has continued the traditional practice of working with whole bunches during the vinification. Having drifted out of fashion in the 80s and 90s, whole bunch vinification is now receiving renewed credibility throughout the Côtes.

The fruit for this cuvée comes from a 1.8-hectare parcel of 50-year-old vines that overlook Savigny. This is a delightfully fragrant Pinot with vivid notes of cranberry, red cherries and a lick of herbal complexity. Pure and fresh, a crunchy, mineral texture to the mid palate gives real poise to the rounded fruit sweetness. Subtle, chalky tannins add grip and structure on the finish.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 89-91

A fine full purple. The bouquet is explosively fruity, yet perfectly balanced. Adorable. Fine clean fruit on the palate with impressive density and grip. Excellent tension, some white pepper adding to the freshness, balanced tannins. Will be first class.

Traditionally a blend across three different parcels that were planted by successive generations of the family in 1939, 1950 and 1979, this cuvée now also includes fruit from a new parcel of vines planted in 2019. The wine opens with a bright, aromatic nose of fresh cranberries and redcurrant, with a whisp of white pepper spice. This is a muscular style of Pinot, with robust, ripe tannins, a mineral-edged core and a vibrant line of red-toned acidity. A wine that will undoubtedly unfurl with time in bottle.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 89-91

The 2023 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Grands Liards is quite understated on the nose as dark berry fruit meets forest floor and pressed flower scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. The acidity is well-judged and harmonious, perhaps needing just a little more complexity to develop on the finish. Drink over the next decade.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 16.5

Oh, this is lovely. Red silk ribbons of fruit, glowing, jewelled. Orange zest, pink peppercorns, a thrilling sweetness inset into thrilling tangerine-zested fragrance. Soft shadow of minerality. Long. This is a such a pleasure – ironically, the cheapest of the Simon Bize 2023s tasted at Goedhuis is by far my favourite. Clean as a whistle. (TC)

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 89-92

Mid crimson purple. Quite reductive, which makes the fruit firmer at the finish. Clearly greater density than the regular village wine, and proper persistence, but less joyous at the moment while reductive. Just a question of time.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

The Bize family own a hectare of this Premier Cru, which borders the commune of Pernand-Vergelesses, and their holding is right the top of the vineyard where the soils are pebbly and free-draining. The 2023 shows vibrant notes of sun-ripened raspberries and red cherries, with an appealing overlay of crushed pink peppercorn. Deliciously pure fruit gives a sensation of summer berry sweetness, supported by fine-grained tannins with an almost polished texture. Bright acidity brings freshness, tension and drive to the palate. Already very well knit together, there is a wealth of potential for further development with careful cellar aging.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 91-93

The 2023 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fournaux 1er Cru has a crisp and precise bouquet with fine mineralité. Like a few of Bize's reds this year it is quite understated, but gradually finds its voice. The palate is well balanced and detailed, shaped by its stems with touches of black pepper and Japanese nori on the finish. Delightful.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 16

Smells like playground fruit juice! Tastes of pecans and strawberry juice. Almost crazy simple and yet it’s not. Tannins like curly brackets and well-brewed tea. Something a little wild? It has a certain tang, but unlike the Bize Vergelesses, no sign of hamsters here. (TC)

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 89-92

An even mid purple. A clean non reductive nose, but not yet showing its fruit much. A fresher structure at the back, more evident tannins but adequate fruit to match them, and a burst of cherry-raspberry fruit to finish. The second winter will refine the tannins.

Les Talmettes is a steep, south-facing vineyard that sits underneath the Bois de Noël, with soils that are known for their high sandstone content. Usually producing a lush style of Pinot, this vineyard has certainly conformed to type in 2023. The aromatic and inviting nose is full of Morello cherry, raspberry and pomegranate fruit aromas, with a savoury, tart edge of reminiscent of dried cherry stones. There is a lovely volume of fruit sweetness here, underpinned by quivering acidity, a distinct mineral tension and firm but refined tannins.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 93-95

The 2023 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Talmettes 1er Cru has a detailed bouquet of tightly wound red fruit, graphite and almost-peaty light earthy scents, rending this one of the most complex from Bize this year. The palate is medium-bodied with wonderful delineation and poise, as the flavors discretely crescendo to a bright, sorbet-fresh finish. Speed dial your local merchant to order this gem.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 90-92

A deeper crimson colour. Once again, a mild reduction on top of darker berries. The fruit is more coherent across the palate and there is a strawberry vigour with some pepper at the finish, as the whole bunches do their thing. Stems introduce a fractional herbaceous note at this stage which should add to the eventual complexity of the wine.

Regarded as one of the prime vineyards within Savigny, the Bize family own a substantial, 2.2-hectare plot in this Premier Cru, which they consider to be one of their signature cuvées. With vines planted in 1939, 1949 and 1954, there is a wealth of old vine complexity and depth to be found in this wine. The 2023 is immediately engaging with vibrant notes of cranberry, raspberry, white pepper spice and a hint of savoury wild herbs. Tightly coiled and muscular, the ripe, red-toned fruit is woven around firm, fine-grained tannins and enlivened by mineral-toned acidity. This is a weighty and serious expression of Pinot that will require time to reveal its full potential.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 93-95

The 2023 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Vergelesses 1er Cru has a very attractive nose, perhaps the most effervescent and defined, with a blend of precise red berry fruit, crushed stone and subtle sous-bois scents. The medium-bodied palate is very elegant and cohesive with lovely poise, fine tannins and similar weight to the Les Talmettes on the finish. Another very promising 2023 from Bize.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 91-94

A clear ruby crimson. Mostly vigorous fruit with also a mild reductive character. Perhaps the highest class fruit across the palate and here the tannins are much smoother than the previous two or three wines. A very graceful long finish.
