2024 Spätburgunders | Weingut Fürst

The Fürst family have been growing grapes since 1638 and produce some of the most delicious Pinot Noirs (AKA Spätburgunder) in Germany. A firm favourite amongst those in the know, bottles can be very hard to find. Low yields, a stellar reputation and demand for good quality German reds means they are snapped up on their home turf. Those who get their hands on a case are handsomely rewarded with what Hugh Johnson describes as “the silkiest and most Burgundian of all German Spätburgunders”.

The 2024 vintage marks a return to a more classical, finely poised expression. In conversation, the winemaker welcomes this stylistic shift, noting its alignment with their long-held preference for balance over excess. The resulting wines are defined by clarity, tension, and aromatic precision, delivering detail and energy while remaining grounded in site character - a compelling case for any serious collection of Pinot Noir.

Sebastian's 'village' wine, from the village of Burgstadt. From a mix of old vines at the bottom of the slope and young vines that will one day make their way into the GGs. Hugely expressive nose, bursting with plums, dark red cherries and cranberry, with a enticing violet-like floral lift. Quite spicy on the palate too, alongside the crushed rock minerality, with a touch of cola root. The finish is super refreshing and long, a very complete wine already.

From plots within the Centgrafenberg and Hunsrück GGs, this is Sebastian's 'Premier Cru' bottling from the estate home of Burgstadt. Slightly darker fruit than its village level little brother, rich plums, darker cherries but with a touch of more lifted wild strawberry too. What this wine does bring to the fore however is the fantastic minerality - there is a ball of lively, saline minerality at the core of this wine. Quite lip-smacking, refreshing and delicious. All this said, there is still a lightness of touch and delicacy to the wine, resulting in a very elegant yet powerful wine. Extraordinarily good.

Deep, rich, fresh and spicy bouquet of ripe and intense sour cherries and crushed sandstone. Very generous already, with a nose and palate that you keep going back to and finding new elements in. Bracing salty minerality, mouthwatering and invigorating! The fruit feels a lot lusher and richer here, the power of this amazing GG palpable. So complex, with so many layers and facets. Built for the long haul, but the purity and plushness gives you an idea already of the brilliance of the fruit and structure.

"My picture perfect vineyard" says Sebastian of this site - a precariously steep plot, hugged by the old walls of the ruined Schloss. Always the most airy and ethereal of Furst's wines, the essence of Pinot and Schlossberg. A haunting bouquet, red fruit, crushed petals and a strong, stony minerality. This has the certain 'je ne sais quoi' that brilliant Pinot Noir has, with the unmistakable hallmark of Furst and this amazing grand cru. Silky, velvety texture, great intensity and energy, with a long finish - this is the real deal.

The Hundsruck GG is to Furst what Chambertin is to Rousseau, what La Tache is to DRC, what Musigny is to Roumier. The jewel in the crown of the estate, and one of the finest sites in Franken. It feels like a perfect marriage of the expressions of the Schlossberg and Centgrafenberg sites - rich and bold and powerful, but with a cool, refreshing minerality, held together by an enticing aromatic prettiness. The 2024 is hugely impressive, strong and impressive, striding forth out of the glass. Crushed strawberries, with a slight humic quality, with a touch of rose petal and black tea, with a long spicy finish. This needs a lot of time, if you can resist its charms.
