  • Neal Martin, October 2016, Score: 91/100

The 1996 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, now at 20 years old, has a very typical bouquet for this estate: correct, linear, well defined, conservative but intense, with pencil shavings, cedar and a subtle balsam aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm structure and well-judged acidity that lends this 1996 impressive focus. It is totally and unashamedly classic in style, austere compared to other Pauillacs from this vintage, the kind of gentleman's claret that should grace a dinner table. I have actually encountered slightly better bottles than this one, tasted at the property. It remains a very fine Pauillac that should drink well for 20-odd years ... just expect a little austerity and aloofness. Tasted July 2016. Neal Martin Score 91/100 Drink Dates 2016-2036

  • Robert Parker, April 1997, Score: 94-96

One of the great wines of the vintage, the 1996 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a legend in the making. It will clearly rival this estate's prodigious 1990 and 1982. Proprietor Xavier Borie has hit the bull's eye in 1996 with his blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot (65% of the production was utilized for this wine). An inky purple color accompanies a fabulously sweet nose of blackcurrants. The wine is so rich that it is impossible to find any evidence of new oak! Massive on the palate, but without any hard edges, this is a huge, full-bodied, awesomely concentrated wine that should prove to be one of the most exciting offerings of the vintage. Moreover, given its sweetness and low acidity, it should drink well within 5-6 years of its release, and easily last for three decades or more. Wow! The 1996 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, which I tasted on three separate occasions, is profound! Drink: 2002-2027.

  • Robert Parker, February 1998, Score: 95-97

The 1996 displays an opaque purple color, as well as sweet, wonderfully pure, jammy blackberry, mineral, and intriguing floral aromas. Enormously rich and full-bodied, with massive intensity, this is a modern day tour de force in winemaking. In spite of being aged in a hefty percentage of new oak, the wine does not reveal any evidence of new oak casks because the fruit character is so pronounced. Statistically, this wine possesses huge amounts of tannin, but it comes across as a seamless giant with extraordinary richness and intensity. This may be even greater than the exceptional 1982, but it may take longer to become accessible than the latter wine. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035. Wow! What extraordinary wines Grand-Puy-Lacoste has produced in both 1995 and 1996. At present, I have a marginal preference for the blockbuster 1996, but I am not about to argue with anybody who prefers the 1995! Both are compelling wines.

  • Robert Parker, April 1999, Score: 93

This is unquestionably a profound Grand-Puy-Lacoste, but it is excruciatingly backward. It reveals an essence of creme de cassis character which sets it apart from other Pauillacs. The wine is displaying plenty of tannin, huge body, and sweet black currant fruit intermixed with minerals and subtle oak. Massive, extremely structured, and with 25-30 or more years of longevity, this immensely-styled Grand-Puy-Lacoste will require 7-8 years of patience, perhaps longer. A superb, classic Pauillac. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030.

  • Clive Coates, June 2001, Score: 18/20

Full colour. Very fine Cabernet/Pauillacnose. Lots of concentration here. Not quiteas intense as the Ducru-Beaucaillou. Butfull, lush, yet firm. Very fine grip and finequality. Lots of dimension. Lots of class.Very lovely long finish. Fine plus.Drink 2006-2020+

Producer

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Grand Puy Lacoste sits on top of one of the steepest slopes in Pauillac, a whole 16 metres above the main flatlands! Hardly Himalayan, but the extra 16 metres of pebble-enriched soil results inparticularly excellent drainage. François-Xavier Borie is at the helm of this very impressive château which was purchased in 1978 from Monsieur Dupin.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
