  • Burghound, January 2002, Score: 91

Beautifully fresh and defined pinot fruit with tightly focused, somewhat one-dimensional flavors and acceptable length. This has shown much better in the past and unlike most in this range, this seemed to be completely shut down and revealing nothing, even after extended airing. While I have never thought the '96 was a truly great DRC Richebourg, this did not show particularly well relative to what I believe is its true potential. Drink: 2008-2018.

  • Burghound, October 2010, Score: 92

(With thanks to Bruce Khouri). A gorgeous, spicy and expressive nose of mostly black fruit aromas combines with rich, sweet and still tight medium full and quite firmly structured flavors that possess a long though slightly edgy and austere finish. Note that this bottle showed better than the one reviewed in the big Richebourg retrospective held in October, 2001. I would not touch another bottle for at least 5 years and this easily has 20 year+ potential as it will require a long time to completely unwind. Tasted on multiple occasions with consistent notes. Drink: try from 2016+.

  • Robert Parker, August 1998, Score: 93-96

As is often the case with this youthful wine, the nose was extremely reticent. After considerable coaxing, I had a peek at this offering's deeply ripe dark fruit aromatics. But what a flavor profile! A massive explosion of profound and intense cherries, raspberries, boysenberries, and strawberries coated my palate. It is a medium-to-full-bodied, densely-fruited, and powerful wine that is perfectly balanced and delineated. Projected maturity: 2005-2018.

Co-owned by the Villaine and the Leroy/Roch families, this historic domaine in the Côtes de Nuits produces arguably the world’s greatest wine and has become the standard against which all others are judged. It is named after its flagship vineyard, the famous monopole La Romanee-Contée which was first planted by the monks from the Abbaye de Saint Vivant in the Middle Ages and came into the possession of the Prince of Conti in 1760 who kept the wines solely for his own private consumption. The vines were replanted in 1947 and before that remained untouched since pre-phylloxera days. The domaine acquired its other monopole, La Tâche in 1933 and also built up significant holdings in other grand cru vineyards over the 19th and 20th century such as Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux and Le Montrachet. Incredibly, all the wines produced by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti are from vineyards classified as Grand Cru, the highest designation available in Burgundy.Read less
