  • Robert Parker, April 2002, Score: 91

The deep purple-colored 1999 Ducru Beaucaillou, which represents 60% of the crop, offers aromas of crushed stones, raspberry liqueur, and black currants. This sweet, pure, and harmonious wine possesses elegance, finesse, and multiple nuances rather than power, concentration, and structure. This is Bordeaux at its finest. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.

  • Robert Parker, April 2001, Score: 90-92

Superb raspberry/blueberry aromas combine with floral/mineral notes to create a nuanced bouquet in this classic, measured, subtle, graceful effort. Medium-bodied as well as beautifully rich and textured, this is Bordeaux at its finest and most delicate. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020.

  • Robert Parker, April 2000, Score: 90-92

Ducru-Beaucaillou is always elegant and complex. The 1999 exhibits an evolved character. This property has been making superb wines since the mid-nineties, and the 1999 is a complete, open-knit offering that depends more on its finesse, multiple aromatic dimensions, and sheer delicacy than power. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, with excellent density, sweet tannin, and delicious symmetry, it will undoubtedly close down after bottling, and require 3-4 years of cellaring. It will keep for two decades. Drink: 2003 - 2020.

  • Jancis Robinson, June 2009, Score: 16.5/20

Looks pretty evolved. Light and well balanced even if not dramatic. Zesty and fills the palate and works its way all across the palate. Just slightly dry on the finish. Jancis Robinson Drink Dates 2008 - 2016 Score 16.5/20

  • Clive Coates, April 2003, Score: 17.5

Full colour. Rich, complete, very elegant nose. Not a blockbuster by any means, it seems. This is very discreet at first. But underneath it is very intense, very harmonious and very classy. Medium-full body. Very long, lingering finish. But not enough punch for better than fine.Drink: 2009 - 2025

Owned by the Borie family over the last 60 years, it has been run by Bruno, the eldest son of the late Jean-Eugène, since 2003. This change in leadership seems to have had a positive effect in all vintages since. Like certain other châteaux in Bordeaux, Ducru carries out cold macerations during their vinification process, a technique in which grapes are steeped in their own juice at low temperatures to gently extract vibrant colour and fleshy fruit.Read less

Region

St Julien

St Julien is like the middle child of the Médoc - not as assertive as Pauillac or as coquettish as Margaux. It lies firmly between the two more outspoken communes and as a result produces a blend of them both. St Julien's wines have often been sought out by aficionados for their balance and consistency, particularly in the UK. Yet due to its middle child nature, it can occasionally be overlooked globally and as a result underrated by those markets outside the UK. Despite the fact that it has no first growths, it has several second growths including Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré and Ducru Beaucaillou as well as the celebrated châteaux such as Talbot and Beychevelle.
