  • Neal Martin, September 2019, Score: 90

The 1999 Montrose is a vintage that I have tasted several times over the years. To be frank, there is not much between the Grand Vin and Deuxième Vin at 20 years, with similar blackberry and graphite aromas on the nose. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple black fruit and a fine line of acidity, but clearly not the complexity of more recent vintages. It still has that Pauillac-like finish, but what is missing is a sense of excitement and personality. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the estate. 2019-2033

  • Robert Parker, April 2002, Score: 90

The black/purple-colored 1999 Montrose offers up notes of pure black fruits intermixed with minerals, smoke, and earth. It is extremely concentrated, surprisingly powerful and dense, with moderate tannin. Its size, strength, and medium to full-bodied personality are atypical for the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025.

  • Robert Parker, April 2001, Score: 87-90

I seriously underestimated the quality of this wine last year. My concerns about a lack of a mid-palate have evaporated, as this wine has fleshed out beautifully. We always need to remember that the purpose of barrel aging (the so-called elevage) is to (1) sweeten the tannin, (2) develop more complexity, and (3) concentrate the wines. That is exactly what has happened. The dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 Montrose exhibits a sweet nose of black fruits, iron, graphite, and smoke. Medium-bodied, with a supple, open-knit personality, low acidity, excellent concentration, and well-integrated tannin, it is a beautifully made, forward style of Montrose that should be ready to drink in 2-3 years, and last for 15-18. If it keeps developing in this manner, it will merit an outstanding score. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.

  • Robert Parker, April 2000, Score: 82-86

A major disappointment for the estate as well as the vintage, the medium ruby-colored, light-bodied 1999 Montrose reveals evidence of dilution. The good news is the fruit is sweet, and there is no evidence of herbaceousness or astringency. The bad news is there is not much to it, and the wine quickly dissipates on the palate. It should be consumed over the next 7-8 years. Drink: 2000 - 2008.

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
