  • Goedhuis, April 2002

An elegant Conseillante with a restrained yet complex appeal. Lots of pure fruit is tempered by a firm but ripe structure.

  • Neal Martin, December 2018, Score: 94

The 2001 La Conseillante clearly is bestowed more vigor and vitality than the 2000. This is beautifully defined, a mélange of red and black fruit laced with black truffle, white pepper and hints of leather. Yet it still feels youthful, as if the aromatics are going to give you more in the future. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, well judged acidity and layers of quite spices, cracked black pepper tinged red fruit mixed with sage and a touch of curry leaf. It expands wonderfully towards the finish, a 2001 that is stating its claim of superiority over the 2000 and doing it with style. This is superb. Tasted at La Conseillante vertical at the property. 94/100

  • Robert Parker

With the son of the Nicolas family, Valmy, taking over and ratcheting up the selection process as well as the quality, La Conseillante appears poised to challenge its closest neighbor, l'Evangile,as the finest estate on the border of the sector of Pomerol facing Cheval Blanc in St.-Emilion. The 2005 will challenge the extraordinary 2000. Among the truly fabulous wines made here (i.e., 2000, 1990, 1989, 1985, and 1982), its deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by an exquisite bouquet of incense, raspberry jam, kirsch, licorice, and hints of black olives as well as flowers. This broadly perfumed Pomerol exhibits sensational purity, sweet tannin, medium to full body, and outstanding elegance and finesse. The fruit is forward and precocious, but there is enough stuffing, structure, and density for the wine to evolve for 20-25 years.

  • Robert Parker, June 2004, Score: 89

Always a Burgundian, feminine style of wine, La Conseillante's 2001 exhibits aromas of plum andraspberry fruit as well as noticeable new oak in a medium-bodied, dark ruby/plum-colored format with excellent ripeness, but hard tannin in the finish. Although disjointed, it reveals signs of precociousness as well as some edginess and unintegrated tannin (the reason for the question mark). There is a lot going on in this elegant 2001, but it is not nearly as profound as the 2000. Nevertheless, it is the type of wine that may fool early tasters as it does need 2-3 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: Drink: 2007-2016

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2002, Score: 16

Slight whiff of swimming pool. Sweet and smooth. Curranty. Dense. Lots of acidity. Not balanced. A bit light on stuffing. Drink 2006-2018

  • Jancis Robinson, Feb 2017, Score: 17.5/20

81% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc. Harvested from 22 September to 30 September. Yields 43 hl/ha. Fermented in stainless steel, fully temperature controlled and vatted for 24 days. 80% in new French oak barrels. pH 3.8. Tasted blind. Looks even more than 11 years younger than the 1990. Vigorous deep crimson. More evolved at the rim than the other 2001 tasted alongside (which turned out to be the wine in double magnum). Silky and lovely and fully formed on the nose. Just a little kick of tannins on the end. Very rich and even slightly gamey on the palate in terms of fruit. In the modern idiom but well done and vigorous. Jancis Robinson Score 17.5/20 Drink Dates 2012-2030

Producer

Château la Conseillante

Many experts consider this an atypical wine, often more reminiscent of grand cru red Burgundy than a heavy weight Pomerol. Its exceptional terroir places it on the Pomerol/St. Emilion border surrounded by Cheval Blanc, Vieux Château Certan, L'Evangile and Pétrus.

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
