  • Goedhuis, April 2002

Jean Michel Cazes year after year produces wonderfully, rich cassis flavoured wines that have giventhis property star billing. Although only a 5th growth in the 1855 classification to all intents and purposes Lynch can be and is thought of as a super second. The wines are invariably enormouslyenjoyable and very approachable and the 2001 is no exception. Unfortunately over the last few yearsprices have risen but the quality of the wine ensures that its still worth those extra Euros.

  • Robert Parker, August 2011, Score: 88

The fully mature 2001 exhibits aromas of tapenade, bay leaf, licorice, red and black currants, damp earth and new saddle leather. Medium-bodied and atypically elegant and charming for a Lynch Bages with soft, fully resolved tannin and a moderately long finish, it is much lighter than a great vintage such as 2000.

Château Lynch-Bages

If any château in all of the classified growths consistently outperforms its original status, it is Lynch Bages. Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
