  • Goedhuis, April 2004

The vines at Cos d'Estournel average 36 years old, and their deep roots and fairly regular St Estephe storms ensured that the vineyard did not suffer from drought. In view of the great quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon, it makes up a larger element of the blend than usual at 70%, with 27% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Dark, intense with a lead pencil and smoke nose and a lovely ripe and fresh palate. This is magnificent and considered by Jean Guillaume Prats as better than the 2000.

  • Robert Parker, August 2014, Score: 97

Two terrific efforts from this vintage, the 2003 Cos d’Estournel (70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) remains one of the superstars of the vintage. It offers an opaque ruby/purple hue as well as notes of incense, camphor, licorice, creme de cassis and graphite. Full-bodied, opulent, incredibly fresh and well-delineated, it can be consumed now and over the next decade. Kudos to the team at Cos d’Estournel.

  • Robert Parker, April 2006, Score: 98

The prodigious, fantastic 2003 Cos d'Estournel is a candidate for “wine of the vintage.” A blend of68% Cabernet Sauvignon (unusually high for this chateau), 30% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, 17,500 cases were produced from low yields. An inky/blue/purple color is accompanied by a compelling perfume of black fruits, subtle smoke, pain grille, incense, and flowers. With extraordinary richness, full body, and remarkable freshness, elegance, and persistence, this is one of the finest wines ever made by this estate. The good news is that it will be drinkable at a young age yet evolve for three decades or more. Kudos to winemaker Jean-Guillaume Prats and owner Michel Reybier. Drink: Now-2030

  • Robert Parker, April 2005, Score: 97-99

Potentially the finest Cos d'Estournel I have ever tasted, this wine seems to have put on evenmore weight and gained strength even after its formidable performance nine months ago. Eighty percent new oak was used and the wine was aged on its lees until early summer of last year. A brilliant effort that is super-concentrated, yet also elegant and harmonious, the wine has an inky/purple color to the rim and a glorious nose of classic creme de cassis intermixed with some smoke, graphite, licorice, fig, and vanilla. Full-bodied, opulently textured, and incredibly concentrated, it has surprising freshness and definition for a wine of such intensity and richness. Jean-Guillaume Prats told me that the finished pH is only 3.6, which is lower than I would have suspected given the wine's textural richness. Moreover, the alcohol is relatively high for aBordeaux at 13.5% (compare that to the 13.1% of the 1990). The finish goes on for almost a minute as this is a truly profound wine that should take its place in the pantheon of great Bordeaux wines for many decades to come. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2030+.

  • James Suckling, April 2004, Score: 95-100

Intense wild blackberry, spice and licorice aromas. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a seductive, rich finish. Goes on and on. A very exotic Cos, with fabulous fruit and ripe tannins. The estate says it is the best wine they have ever made and I think they could be right. 15,000 cases made. -- J.S.

  • Decanter, April 2004

Very deep ruby, very concentrated nose with exotic spice and firmer Cabernet Sauvignon than usual, rich and smooth, explodes with fruit on the palate, terrific length, very good indeed. Drink: Now-2030.

Since 2000, Cos d’Estournel has been in the hands of French hotelier Michel Reybier. Under Reybier’s direction, the château has thrived. In 2007 he commissioned a state-of-the-art wine cellar, the first in Bordeaux to use solely gravity (no pumps). The 91-hectare vineyard is planted to a majority Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot (33%), Cabernet Franc (1%) and Petit Verdot (1%) and produces the Grand Vin Cos d’Estournel and a second wine, Pagodes de Cos.Read less

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
