Goedhuis, April 2004
Ch Langoa Barton always tastes particularly good from barrel. The 2003 is no exception. Dense and complex with a really classy feel to it and perfect balance. This is a great Langoa Barton.

Robert Parker, August 2014, Score: 91
A classic St.-Julien, the 2003 Langoa Barton offers notes of cedarwood, fruitcake, spice box and black currants as well as some light tannins still in evidence. This dark plum/ruby/garnet-colored, medium to full-bodied wine possesses sweet fruit, but no over-ripeness or roasted characteristics. Coming into full maturity, it should continue to drink well for another decade.

Robert Parker, April 2006, Score: 90
This is often looked at as the second wine of Leoville Barton, but it is actually a separate estate, producing wines that are slightly softer than the more formidably endowed and broodingly backward Leoville Bartons. The outstanding 2003, a softer version of the Leoville Barton, exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, sweet black cherries intermixed with subtle herbal notes, roasted meats, juices, and black currants. In the mouth, it is expansive, savory, round, and seemingly on a much faster evolutionary track than Leoville Barton. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15-18 years. Drink: 2008-2026

Robert Parker, April 2005, Score: 90-92
Dense purple-colored, muscular, and virile, the 2003 exhibits high levels of tannin, a powerful, leathery, gritty texture, enormous concentration, medium to full body, low acidity, wonderful sweetness and richness, but sizeable tannin. I seem to consistently underrate this wine when it is young. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2023.

James Suckling, April 2004, Score: 92-94
Blackberry, licorice and cherry. Full-bodied, sweet and velvety. Long and beautiful. This is 2000 all over again, but riper. Langoa is always a good value. -- J.S.

Decanter, April 2004
Very deep ruby, quite oaky, slightly bacony nose, supple and fragrant fruit on palate, rather reserved fruit, good tannins, fine concentration and balance. Drink: 2010-2025.
Region
St Julien
St Julien is like the middle child of the Médoc - not as assertive as Pauillac or as coquettish as Margaux. It lies firmly between the two more outspoken communes and as a result produces a blend of them both. St Julien's wines have often been sought out by aficionados for their balance and consistency, particularly in the UK. Yet due to its middle child nature, it can occasionally be overlooked globally and as a result underrated by those markets outside the UK. Despite the fact that it has no first growths, it has several second growths including Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré and Ducru Beaucaillou as well as the celebrated châteaux such as Talbot and Beychevelle.
