  • Burghound, January 2005, Score: 95-98

An incredibly fine and pure aromatic profile that is first and foremost ripe but this does not detract from the usual La Tâche aromatic fireworks as the highly perfumed, seductive, spicy and pungent floral notes makes for an utterly brilliant nose. The flavors are presently somewhat understated and while there is superb concentration, I was quite surprised that there is almost a reserve here, even a certain coolness that is extremely rare for a vintage that is essentially generous and overt in basic character. But perhaps what I admire the most here is the transparency, which is again relatively rare in this vintage, and the overall harmony of expression. In short, this is a wine of finesse and purity and even though it's certainly ripe, it's the most understated wine in the cellar today. I believe this will ultimately be a great La Tâche and whether it can rival such vintages as the '99, '90, '64,'62, '49, '45 and '37, time will tell but it might as there is a lot of potential here. Drink: 2020+.Notes: from yields of only 14.5 hl/ha.

  • Burghound, January 2012, Score: 95

Like the 2005, this really has not changed significantly though at 8 years of age, one can begin to see a subtle amount of aromatic development but I stress that it's subtle and overall, this remains quite primary aromatically speaking. The usual La Tâche aromatic fireworks are present as the highly perfumed, seductive, spicy and pungent floral notes make for an utterly brilliant nose. The broad-shouldered flavors remain somewhat understated and while there is superb concentration, the unexpected sense of reserve I noted in my original review is still here as there is even a certain coolness that is extremely rare for the 2003 vintage. Perhaps equally unexpected is that the '03 La Tâche is essentially a wine that marries finesse and purity with power because even though it is dense, it remains balanced and never heavy. To be sure, the effects of the vintage are noticeable as the finish is very ripe with notes of plum, mocha and coffee. Again, though this is only 8 years of age, nothing has changed to modify my view that this should be capable of lasting 50 years, indeed I have extended my initial drinking window somewhat. As with the 2005, this should ultimately be a great La Tâche though it's going to require plenty of patience until it gets there. Drink: 2023+.

  • Burghound, May 2008, Score: 95

An incredibly fine and pure aromatic profile that is first and foremost ripe but this does not detract from the usual La Tâche aromatic fireworks as the highly perfumed, seductive, spicy and pungent floral notes makes for an utterly brilliant nose that is already coming out of its youthful shell. In short, this is a wine of finesse and purity because even though it is dense, it remains balanced and never heavy. To be sure, this is very ripe with finishing notes of plum, mocha and coffee, it is one powerful wine that possesses huge length and it should be capable of lasting 50 years. This should ultimately be a great La Tâche though whether it can rival such vintages as the '99, '90, '64,'62, '49, '45, '37 and '34, time will tell but it might as there is a huge underlying reservoir of potential here.

Co-owned by the Villaine and the Leroy/Roch families, this historic domaine in the Côtes de Nuits produces arguably the world’s greatest wine and has become the standard against which all others are judged. It is named after its flagship vineyard, the famous monopole La Romanee-Contée which was first planted by the monks from the Abbaye de Saint Vivant in the Middle Ages and came into the possession of the Prince of Conti in 1760 who kept the wines solely for his own private consumption. The vines were replanted in 1947 and before that remained untouched since pre-phylloxera days. The domaine acquired its other monopole, La Tâche in 1933 and also built up significant holdings in other grand cru vineyards over the 19th and 20th century such as Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux and Le Montrachet. Incredibly, all the wines produced by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti are from vineyards classified as Grand Cru, the highest designation available in Burgundy.Read less

Region

La Tâche

The AOC La Tache, along with Romanée Conti, is a monopole of the Domaine de La Romanée Conti. The red wine from La Tache is very elegant, silky and opulent with mature notes of spice and violets. This Grand Cru vineyard is one of six Grand Crus in Vosne Romanée and is completely organic. La Tache does very well in lesser years and was the only wine deemed worth bottling in 1950 and 1951 by the Domaine de la Romanée Conti.
