  • Goedhuis, June 2008

Darker and more brooding than Feudo, the 2006 San Lorenzo comes from Giuseppe's highest vineyard. Brimming with black cherries, damson plum and bramble fruit, it is expressive and velvety on the palate, yet it never completely reveals its secrets. As a result, it will require a bit of time to coax it out of its shell- but when that happens, it will be notably beguiling. The finish just goes on-and-on. The Gevrey Chambertin of Mount Etna. Only 3000 bottles have been produced.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2008, Score: 17

This wine was apparently grown in the popular Giardola contrade and is nearly 16% alcohol but it certainly doesn't taste it. Very aromatic and complete on the nose. Very burgundian nose but the Nerello tastes almost like Grenache - on the palate it seemed more southern Rhône than Burgundy. Drink 2009-11

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2008, Score: 17

Very light crimson, 45-year-old vines. Very flattering, rich, sweet cough-medicine flavours. Big and bold. Should sell well in the US. Very fruity and soft. Thick and dense. Chewy tannins. Drink 2009-11

Mount Etna, the area on the eastern side of Sicily, is the most extraordinary place. Volcanic, mountainous yet also cooler than most of Sicily due to its higher altitude, it is spectacularly rich with flora including orange, lemon, avocado, plum, pistachio, almond and mimosa trees as well as artichokes, broccoli and, of course, grapes. Nothing could be closer to the Garden of Eden than this. For its wines, the main grapes are the indigenous and late ripening Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, varieties that "yield wines of notable aromatic complexity, with finessed tannins and a weightless quality that recalls Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo." (Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, Feb 2008) The Russo family have been grape growers for generations in Mount Etna and for all those generations, they sold their harvest to larger producers. In 2005, the young and dynamic Giuseppe Russo realised that he was missing out on the potential of his vines (many being 80-100 years old) and began producing a miniscule production from his own vines. They are juicy and ripe yet are refined, focused and mineral - like those from the Côte d'Or. They are absolutely delicious andhighly recommended.Read less

Region

Sicily

Formerly churning out gallons of bulk wine, Sicily is in the throws of a viticultural revolution and now boasts many excellent wines. Geographically diverse, the island's wine reflect this variety. Planeta got the world's attention with its excellent Chardonnay and Merlot, but increasingly it is a raft of indigenous varieties that are hitting the headlines. Delicious Etna Rosso made from Nerello Mascalese, unctuous Passito di Pantelleria from Moscato and full-bodied reds from Nero d'Avola are all of interest.
