  • Goedhuis, April 2010, Score: 92-94

A luscious d'Issan that will not disappoint its followers or those who love Margaux. Emmanueldescribes his 2009 as "Like 2005 but just a bit bigger, softer and rounder." Plump, tender and curvaceous, it is undoubtedly a sexy little number. He feels that the 2009 is very close to 2005 in quality, and we thoroughly agree. Unfortunately, over 50% of his crop was lost to hail at flowering so there will not be much of this delicious wine available.

  • Neal Martin, Marc 2019, Score: 93

The 2009 d’Issan is endowed with an intense and classically styled bouquet, quite tight at the beginning but opening with black plum and bilberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, almost Pauillac in style with graphite infused black fruit and a long, black pepper and cedar infused finish. This represents the best showing of the 2009 d'Issan. Excellent. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

  • Robert Parker, February 2012, Score: 93

A strong effort from proprietor Emmanuel Cruse, d’Issan’s 2009 was fashioned from minuscule yields of 18 hectoliters per hectare, and its 13.7% natural alcohol set a record at this estate. Composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot, it exhibits a classic Margaux fragrance of acacia flowers/violets, blueberries, cassis, licorice and camphor. Opulent and full-bodied with silky tannins as well as a rich, dense style, it will be interesting to compare the 2009 with the brilliant 2000 and 2005 over the next two to three decades. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2035+.

  • Robert Parker, April 2010, Score: 93-95

Following the lustrous 2000 and 2005, the 2009 is another terrific effort from proprietor Emmanuel Cruse. A wine boasting stunning minerality along with notes of flowers, blueberries, and black currants. Full-bodied with silky tannin, a tremendous opulence, and levels of density and richness never before seen at this estate, this brilliant d'Issan should age for three decades or more. Drink: 2010 - 2040

  • Decanter, April 2010, Score: 17.5

Dense red, rich,, plummy black fruits, wonderful middle palate showing great structure over the lissom, fleshy fruit, lovely texture and very good tannins for the future. Drink 2015-28.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2010, Score: 17

Dark, intense nose. Very smooth and satin-like with the tannins extremely ripe underneath. Very similar blend to Blason, 40% Merlot, same as in 2005. Fresh and ripe and easy. With a nice kick on the finish. This should last a lot longer but it's very much in the same style.

Producer

Château d'Issan

Many collectors view this château as well worth its status... and they are not alone. For centuries, d'Issan has been a coveted treasure. According to local lore, it was served at thewedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry Plantagenet as well as a favourite of Emperor François-Joseph of Austria. Since 1945, the property has been owned by the Cruse family with Emmanuel Cruse at the château's helm.

Region

Margaux

Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
