Even inkier in color than the 2010, the 2009 Ermitage le Meal is as good as Hermitage gets. Locked and loaded with phenomenal notes of jammy black raspberries, creme de cassis, crushed violets, smoked earth and spice, it's thick and unctuous on the palate, with incredible density, a huge mid-palate and a layered, multi-dimensional, seamless, elegant texture that just keeps you coming back and begging for another sip. More hedonistic and voluptuous than the 2010, it should still evolve for just as long, yet have even a broader drink window.

  • Vinous, March 2012, Score: 94

Vivid purple. Highly perfumed aromas of boysenberry and blueberry liqueur, with spice and potpourri notes adding complexity. Powerful but lively black and blue fruit flavors show excellent clarity and stain the palate. This wine has gained in elegance over the past year. The vibrant finish clings with outstanding tenacity.

  • Jancis Robinson, December 2016, Score: 18.5

You might think it sacrilege to broach this so young but it was extremely welcoming even at this young age. Dark ruby, dusty and dry and savoury but with great fruit concentration and rigour. Long and jewelly with so much noble fruit you are quite confident it has a great future. Rich and peppery. Serious stuff with great tannin handling. Lots of tannins here but not aggressively so. Very well made with a reverberant finish.

In 1879, the distant ancestor Polydor Chapoutier was the first to begin to buy vines, thus moving from the status of wine-grower of an estate to that of a viticulturist, a wine producer and a businessman. Seven generations later, we find Michel, forty something, with a real passion for the expression of soils, at the head of this exceptional vineyard. This young, determined man has succeeded in combining the past with daring and creativity. Michel took the domaine entirely biodynamic and eschews the use of cultured yeasts. His favoured approach is to avoid the use of press wine.Read less

Region

Hermitage

Hermitage is a region that produces both red and white wines. Its famous red is made from 100% Syrah while the white is produced from Marsanne and/or Roussanne. A sweeter and very rare white wine is also produced from grapes that have been dried on straw before being pressed. A slighter warmer micro-climate enables Hermitage's red wines to have more ripeness and structure than Côte Rôtie which adds additional power and longevity. As a result, they are usually the most ‘masculine' styled reds in all of the northern Rhône.
