  • Goedhuis, April 2012, Score: 90-92

Sweet dark plum fruit aromas and flavours; despite its natural plumpness of fruit it remains tight and intense in the mid palate. A concentrated and powerful Pomerol which will benefit from time in bottle.

  • Robert Parker, April 2012, Score: 88-91

Made in the elegant, finesse-filled Bordeaux style, the 2011 La Conseillante displays a deep ruby/purple color along with hints of acacia blossoms intermixed with sweet cherry and mulberry fruit backed up by subtle toasty oak. Attractive on the attack and medium-bodied with good acidity, the 2011 is not a blockbuster such as we saw in 2009 and 2010, but it may resemble the estate’s top-flight 1981 (a so-so year in which La Conseillante produced a delicious wine). It will provide early drinking and should last for 10-12 years. Drink: 2012-2024.

  • James Suckling, April 2012, Score: 91-92

Pretty blueberry and chocolate character. Medium to full body, with fine tannins and a chocolate, spice and almond. Delicate style. 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

  • Decanter, April 2012, Score: 17

Gentle extraction (advised by new consultant, ex-JP Moueix winemaker Jean-Claude Berrouet). Accent on the fruit. Less volume than 2009 and 2010 but good length and balance. Drink 2018-2030. (4 stars).

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2012, Score: 17

Deep black cherry. Aromatic, ripe fruit with a leaning toward cough linctus. Lovely freshness on the palate, juicy and fresh and lively and leaves your mouth revitalised. One of the most attractive Pomerols I've tasted so far in this vintage. Tannins well judged. Drink 2017-2029

  • Wine Spectator, April 2012, Score: 90-93

Shows the elegant, caressing fruit of the vintage, with supple cassis, blackberry and cherry compote notes, while harnessing the lively acidity and burying it nicely in toast- and black tea-infused wood. Features a classy, silky finish.

Producer

Château la Conseillante

Many experts consider this an atypical wine, often more reminiscent of grand cru red Burgundy than a heavy weight Pomerol. Its exceptional terroir places it on the Pomerol/St. Emilion border surrounded by Cheval Blanc, Vieux Château Certan, L'Evangile and Pétrus.

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
