  • Goedhuis, April 2012, Score: 90-92

Langoa always expresses its charm and openness at a very early stage and the 2011 is no exception. A wine with lovely breadth, it is full and concentrated, with fine layers of dark berried fruit. A fine example of St Julien, balancing femininity with a hint of structure and power.

  • Robert Parker, April 2012, Score: 86-88+

It is difficult to find any sweet fruit in this firmly structured, backward, austere, astringently tannic, dry 2011. The color is a healthy dense ruby/purple and the wine is earthy, but charmless at present. This will be more interesting to taste once it has been bottled.

  • James Suckling, April 2012, Score: 92-93

This is dense with a lovely blueberry and mineral character. Full body, with silky tannins and a long finish. It is dense and very pretty. Well done.

  • Decanter, April 2012, Score: 17

Very good depth of Cabernet fruit and velvety smooth texture plus charm, depth and class. Drink 2015-2028. (4 stars).

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2012, Score: 16

Deep dark cherry colour. Not much on the nose. Some oak char and savour on the palate and a slight herbaceous note. Tannins are rounded but there's just not a lot of flavour even though the structure is kept in its place. Juicy finish. Drink 2017-2028.

  • Wine Spectator, April 2012, Score: 90-93

A pure and elegant style, with plum and cassis fruit that's nicely unadorned. Hints of iron and violets filter in on the finish. Deceptive length.

Producer

Château Langoa Barton

This château is owned by the Barton family (with Léoville Barton). Serving as a home and a winecellar, Langoa took its name from "gué" an old French word for the small stream that flows at thesouthern end of the property. Unlike the classical style of its stable mate, Langoa tends to be more approachable and flattering at a young age with fleshy fruit and textured tannins.

Region

St Julien

St Julien is like the middle child of the Médoc - not as assertive as Pauillac or as coquettish as Margaux. It lies firmly between the two more outspoken communes and as a result produces a blend of them both. St Julien's wines have often been sought out by aficionados for their balance and consistency, particularly in the UK. Yet due to its middle child nature, it can occasionally be overlooked globally and as a result underrated by those markets outside the UK. Despite the fact that it has no first growths, it has several second growths including Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré and Ducru Beaucaillou as well as the celebrated châteaux such as Talbot and Beychevelle.
