Vinous, September 2015, Score: 93
(aged entirely in new French oak): Dark purple. An explosively perfumed bouquet displays scents of ripe dark berries, incense and vanilla, with an intense floral nuance adding lift. Stains the palate with potent black and blue fruit liqueur and violet pastille flavors, with zesty acidity providing spine and lift. Smooth tannins build slowly and steadily through a strikingly long, focused finish, with the dark fruit and floral notes repeating. I was surprised by this suave wine's forward character but suspect that it will be even better with another five-plus years of bottle age.
Region
Toro
Heading towards the Portuguese border to the far west of the River Duero lies Toro. These high altitude vineyards (600 - 750 meters) span the banks of the river on dry stony soils. Tinta de Toro is the local variant of Tempranillo which used to produce rich alcoholic wines. Awarded DO status in 1987, it was in the mid-1990s that the region's potential was spotted. Since then the number of bodegas has rocketted and there has been major investment which clearly shows in the end result. Ripe, fruity and distinctly Spanish these are mini-Riberas!
