  • Neal Martin, July 2019, Score: 96

The 2015 Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarosse is a major surprise, far better than it showed just 12 months ago. There is a superb bouquet, very floral and mineral driven, a mixture of red/black fruit that soars from the glass. The palate is very well defined with supple tannin, silky, crisp and focused with a fine bead of acidity, and wonderful tension on the finish. This is a great 2015 from Nicolas Thienpont and his team. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

  • Antonio Galloni, Feb 2018, Score: 98

One of the undisputed stars of the vintage, the 2015 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse is dark, brooding and explosive to its core. The essence of super-ripe dark cherry, plum, graphite, crushed rocks, gravel, smoke and incense infuses a dramatic, sweeping Saint-Émilion endowed with superb power and intensity. Sumptuous, spectacularly rich and also massively structured, the 2015 is going to need at least a decade to come into its own. Those lucky enough to find it are in for a treat, as the 2015 is a total stunner. Nicolas Thienpont and his team hit a number of home runs in 2015, including at Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse, where both wines are simply great. Tasted two times with consistent notes. -- Antonio Galloni 98 Antonio Galloni 2025 - 2055

Previously managed by Jean Michel Dubos, this tiny 7 hectare estate is now run by Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse and Prisca Courtin. Together, they have implemented significant changes: a newteam, new partnerships with rising oenologists, and a new approach towinemaking that seeks to reveal the truest and freshest expression of theproperty's exceptional terroir. Having stripped its name back to Beauséjourearlier this year - though giving a nod to its namesake co-owner and previous titlethrough the inclusion of "J. Duffau-Lagarrosse" on the label - the dynamic duo isdelighted to unveil the estate's new visual identity, an embodiment of the latestchapter in its history.Read less

Region

St Emilion

South of Pomerol lies the medieval, perched village of St Emilion. Surrounding St Emilion are vines that produce round, rich and often hedonistic wines. Despite a myriad of soil types, two main ones dominate - the gravelly, limestone slopes that delve down to the valley from the plateau and the valley itself which is comprised of limestone, gravel, clay and sand. Despite St Emilion's popularity today, it was not until the 1980s to early 1990s that attention was brought to this region. Robert Parker, the famous wine critic, began reviewing their Merlot-dominated wines and giving them hefty scores. The rest is history as they say. Similar to the Médoc, there is a classification system in place which dates from 1955 and outlines several levels of quality. These include its regional appellation of St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is further divided into "A" (Ausone and Cheval Blanc) and "B" (including Angélus, Canon, Figeac and a handful of others). To ensure better accuracy, the classification is redone every 10 years enabling certain châteaux to be upgraded or downgraded depending on on the quality of their more recent vintages.
