  • Goedhuis, April 2016, Score: 93-95

For Gazin purists, this is possibly somewhat modern in style, but my, what a lovely wine it is. This is fleshy, rich, but also charming and harmonious. Layers and layers of sweet dark fruit flavours, with hints of molasses and cinnamon spice. Some rich tannins on the finish and very long at the end.

  • Neal Martin, July 2019, Score: 93

The 2015 Gazin has a fragrant bouquet of blackberry, briary and truffle; a whiff of bonfire smoke emerges with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, quite edgy and tensile with a fresh, graphite and tobacco-laced finish that is classic in style. Superb, if missing the same horsepower of 12 months ago. This might well be closing down. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

  • Neal Martin, April 2016, Score: 94-96

The 2015 Gazin has a perfumed bouquet with layers of black cherry, raspberry coulis and truffle scents, more welcoming and sensual than the wines a decade ago from barrel when they intermittently felt under-ripe. There is none of that here for sure. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit on the entry. There is excellent structure here, a masculine Gazin with plenty of grip, counterbalanced by abundant tertiary, tobacco-tinged black fruit. There is real salinity towards the finish, completing a superb wine by Nicolas de Bailliencourt and his team. Do not overlook this Pomerol. It is one of the subtler expressions of the 2015 vintage and one that I am sure will develop beautifully in cask.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2016, Score: 89-92

The 2015 Gazin is dark, fleshy and wonderfully expressive. Mocha, bittersweet chocolate and a host of ripe dark fruit, along with the wine's contours, give the 2015 much of its sumptuous personality. This is a decidedly plush, extracted style, but all the elements are nicely balanced throughout.

  • Robert Parker, Feb 2018, Score: 93/100

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Gazin is scented of baked plums, Christmas cake, mincemeat and plum preserves with hints of chocolate box, coffee, tapenade and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied with mouth-filling baked berries and savory layers, it has firm, chewy tannins and a long finish. Lisa Perrotti Brown 93/100 Drink Dates 2020-2040

  • Decanter, April 2016, Score: 92

Maintaining great consistency these days. Big, bold and succulent with an impressive depth of ripe fruit and tannins. Rich but balanced. A reliable purchase.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2016, Score: 17++

Neither too oaky, nor too green, this is a confusing wine because the astringency is pervasive and this must be accountable to over-extraction and raw tannins. The fruit, or rather what I can sense of the fruit, is aromatic and enjoyable. The question is, will it shed its tannic, oaky cloak before the fruit gives up the game? I doubt it. 17++?

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2016, Score: 17

Bright crimson. Appetising and savoury on the nose. Much drier than most Pomerols. Racy and mineral. Drink 2024-2040

  • Tim Atkin, May 2016, Score: 96

I can’t remember tasting a better vintage of Gazin at this age. Exceeding my expectations, this is a lovely, harmonious, well balanced blend. This carries its 14.5% alcohol with ease, thanks to the succulent black fruits balanced by acidity and minerality. Drink: 2022-30

Producer

Château Gazin

If one were to choose one château in all of Bordeaux to live in, this might well be the one. Beautifully serene with soft hues and stone walls, it is inviting and warm. Unfortunately, we were only invited to taste, so our residential fantasies soon had to fade into the morning mist.

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
