Goedhuis, December 2017
Thomas describes the fruit character of the vintage as “bright, light fruit”. Tasting this superb premier cru you understand precisely what he means. Striking redcurrant aromas, this has great purity and freshness. It is a very joyous style, supported by some firm gritty tannins which provide drive and length at the end. Excellent.

Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 90-92
The 2016 Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens (from "Rugiens-Haut") includes 30% whole bunch, whereas Thomas usually add no stems. He just found that the fruit was very ripe and the seeds almost back in color…so why not? Matured in 20% new oak, it has a crisp, slightly stemmy bouquet, very fresh with damp undergrowth and woodland scents filtering through the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, quite linear and poised, darker fruit than expected with quite a stern but refreshingly saline finish that needs to show a little more charm. I am intrigued to see how this ages, and it may well surpass my banded score. Drink 2021-2038

Burghound, April 2018, Score: 91-93
A compositionally similar if slightly less obviously wooded nose precedes exceptionally rich, sleek and polished large-scaled flavors that are shaped by slightly finer tannins as well as a markedly more evident mineral streak that runs the length of the wine. While not quite as dense, the excellent intensity does a slow build from the mid-palate all the way to the explosive finish and this too should age well. Sweet spot Outstanding. Drink 2028+

Jancis Robinson, January 2018, Score: 17.5
Savoury, muscular start and then masses of vibrant fruit. Lots going on here and great brightness and focus. Seems to have the fruit, tannin and acidity proportions just right. No hurry to drink. Drink 2028-2045
Region
Pommard
A long popular appellation, Pommard is yet another exclusive red wine area which produces by far the most structured reds of the Côte de Beaune. It extracts rich body and long ageing potential from the limestone/iron-rich clay soil. Some examples can be markedly rustic, yet as time has passed and winemaking know-how has improved, Pommard's wines are becoming softer and more approachable when young. Its vines cover 317 hectares of which over a third are premier cru vineyards. Several have pronounced following and even one, Les Rugiens, is being pushed to become a grand cru.
