  • Goedhuis, November 2017

Deep dark cherry colour. There are beautifully perfumed aromas of raspberries and violets as the wine enters the palate. Initially linear and direct, it then evolves to with breadth, richness and power whilst retaining elegant finesse. This is a truly outstanding grand cru.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 96-98

The 2016 Richebourg Grand Cru was not touched at all by the frost, so there are the full five barrels this year (sometimes it can be six). It has a majestic bouquet with ample blackberry, raspberry preserve and brown spice scents, later a touch of white flowers and truffle. This is so mercurial in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin. This is beautifully focused, tensile and brimming with energy, yet it remains linear, almost aloof right to the finish, a covert sign that it should not be broached for at least a decade like most great Richebourgs. An aristocrat. Drink 2025-2055

  • Burghound, January 2018, Score: 93-96

Here too there is just enough wood hovering in the background of the wonderfully spicy, airy and cool array of mostly dark berry fruit and floral aromas to remark upon. The tautly muscular and intensely mineral-driven large-scaled flavors possess innate power while drenching the palate in dry extract while delivering gorgeous depth and length on the dusty and youthfully austere finish. This is terrific though like several wines in the range, it would be virtually pointless to open a bottle young and besides, there is so much potential here that it would be a shame to waste it. Don't miss! Drink: 2035+

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 95-98

Bright red with ruby tones. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate are lifted by a violet topnote. Utterly suave on entry, conveying outstanding precision and energy to its flavors of black and blue fruits and crushed rock, with a piquant hint of bitter orange marmalade contributing to the overall impression of nobility. Suave, toothdusting tannins are totally supported by fruit and the seamless, palate-saturating finish perfumes the mouth with minerals, violet and Valrhona bitter chocolate, going on for a minute or more. As charismatic as this young Richebourg is today, it's far from the most demonstrative wine in the cellar. It will need at least a decade of bottle aging and should last for at 25 to 30 years in a cool cellar.

  • Jancis Robinson, November 2017, Score: 18.5

5 barrels, a mix of new and second use. Transparent crimson. Rich, opulent nose. Gracious and masses of red fruit! Rich and intense and obviously in new oak, some of it very long and glam. Masses of energy. Great density and finesse. Wonderful. Very long. Etienne promises that it will develop continuously over the next few weeks. Drink 2025-2045

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.Read less
