This is bright ruby and positively bursting with the rich scent of cherries, redcurrants and cinnamon spice. Having not quite finished malolactic fermentation upon our tasting in November, the palate was harder to judge, but the future looks bright.

100% new oak. Barrel sample. This really is black almost to the rim. Smokily reductive and quite a charry character at the moment. An early phase of life. Moreish and dense but with a lightness of touch. So charry at the moment it is difficult to see beyond it. So dense, I can barely get to the heart of it. I have to use my imagination here but everything is here, just a bit awkward at the moment. Drink 2028-2040 (JH)

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.Read less

Region

Romanée Saint Vivant

Romanée-St-Vivant, which takes its name from the monastery of St-Vivant founded in c. 900, is a Grand Cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. It is the largest of Vosne-Romanée's six Grands Crus and produces red wine only. The vineyard is located on the slope to the north of the town of Vosne-Romanée and is the nearest vineyard to this village. Romanée-Saint-Vivant's soils are deep and rich in clay and lime, which means the wines of Romanée-St-Vivant are usually lighter and less powerful than its neighbours'. Domaine de la Romanée Conti is the largest proprietor, owning over half of the area's 9.5 ha.
