  • Goedhuis, December 2017

Les Malconsorts needs little introduction, and garners as much reverence and respect as most grand cru sites amongst growers and consumers alike. Lying just to the south of La Tâche is has the density and mystery of the finest Vosne terroir. The 2016 has gorgeous purity and fullness. As usual, Charles will bottle the small volume he has made exclusively in magnums.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 94-96

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts has a disarmingly beautiful nose with blackcurrant, briary and cold stone scents that offer great typicité. Likewise, the palate has a structure typical of this premier cru, denser and more mineral-driven than the Suchots, perhaps at the same time more aloof. But that is what you want from a Malconsorts and there is great precision on the long and tender finish. There is great potential here. Drink 2022-2045

  • Burghound, January 2018, Score: 92-94

A markedly floral nose speaks of violet, lavender and rose petal, all of which adds elegance to the red and dark cherry aromas that exhibit plenty of Asian-style spice elements. There is outstanding energy and punch to the tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that possess fine mid-palate density that coats the palate on the stony and very firm finale. This is excellent though note well that it will not be for the faint-hearted in magnum format. Outstanding. Drink: 2036+

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 92-95

Bright red-ruby. Deep aromas of black cherry, menthol and crushed stone lifted by a violet topnote. Large-scaled, sappy, sweet and mouthfilling but very backward (the malolactic fermentation finished very late), combining the density of the Suchots with the minerality of the Beaumonts but at another level of complexity and length. This wine boasts grand cru volume, displaying terrific sucrosité and finishing with serious, tactile tannins.

  • Decanter, January 2018, Score: 94

The Malconsorts is beautiful this year, opening in the glass with a brooding nose of wild berries, plum, rose petal and exotic spice, framed by some classy new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and complete, with a deep core of fruit, fine-grained, integrated tannins, and excellent length. This will be bottled entirely in magnums in 2016, and they are well worth hunting down. Drink 2024-2040

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
