  • Goedhuis, July 2018

This is often the most fleshy and rich of the Chandon de Briailles Cortons. The vineyard has thin, poor topsoil containing lots of gravely stones over limestone. The wine is darker in colour and character than the Maréchaudes and was one of the last in the cellar to finish malolactic fermentation this year. In July, it still seems a little closed, but the wild berry tones and grippy, refined tannins underneath promise a bright future.

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 90-92

The 2017 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru was due to be bottled at the beginning of spring. It has a more complex bouquet than the Les Maréchaudes, offering blackberry, raspberry, crushed stone/flint and light vervain tea scents. The palate is smooth and supple on the entry, with a fine bead of acidity. There is good volume and depth here, although some of the Premier Crus perhaps have a little more complexity and tension on the finish. This is still a fine Corton, however, and it should give 15 years of pleasure, probably more. 2020 - 2033

  • Burghound, October 2019, Score: 93

Subtle hints of wood toast are present on the cool and overtly floral-inflected aromas of red berries, smoke, sandalwood and spice. The mouth feel of the middle weight plus flavors are finer yet there is the classic Corton muscle that shows up on the notably firm, powerful and driving finish. As the best examples of Bressandes always are, this is a wine of power and refinement. Drink: 2032+

  • Burghound, April 2019, Score: 91

Extremely subtle hints of brett are present on the cool but ripe aromas of red berries, smoke, sandalwood and spice. The mouth feel of the middle weight plus flavors are finer yet there is the classic Corton muscle that shows up on the notably firm, powerful and driving finish. Once again, my rating assumes that the barnyard element remains as subtle as it is now. Drink 2032+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2019, Score: 92-94

The 2017 Corton Bressandes Grand Cru is lovely, wafting from the glass with notes of dark fruits, nori, licorice, rich soil, blood orange, rose hip and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and satiny, its fine-grained tannins largely concealed in a gourmand core of succulent fruit, concluding with a saline, mineral finish. Long on complexity and character, this is a terrific Corton Bressandes.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Corton

The Grands Crus of Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay are shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majorityof Pinot Noir is planted in the southern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from these areas tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
