Producer

Domaine Trimbach

Concealed within the charming medieval town of Ribeauvillé in the heart of Alsace, Domaine Trimbach’s viticultural origins date back to 1626, when Jean Trimbach first moved to nearby Riquewihr. Thirteen generations of devoted and innovative winemakers later, and Trimbach is regarded as one of Alsace’s finest estates, producing some of the most magnificent Rieslings the region has to offer. Today, the estate is led by father and son double act, Pierre and Jean, both of whom have total control over production, from the vineyard right through to the bottling line. Unlike many modern-day Alsatian wines, which often contain higher levels of residual sugar, Domaine Trimbach’s wines are defined by their steely elegance and refreshing acidity. Proud Protestants, the wines are, in the family’s own words, ‘Protestant’ in style, with a firmness and purity that is carried throughout the five classified ranges. The Clos Sainte Hune Riesling, a single vineyard wine from Hunawihr, is widely considered to be Domaine Trimbach’s chef d’oeuvre, and is coveted by Riesling lovers all around the globe. Produced in small quantities each year, Clos Sainte Hune has exceptional ageing potential and is regarded as one of the finest examples of Alsace Riesling.

Region

Alsace

On the Eastern border of France lying between the Vosges mountains and the Rhine river, this much-disputed area has for a large part of its existence been in the hands of Germany. This is visually apparent in the half-timbered houses lining the streets in medieval-looking villages and vinously evident in the prevalence of white wine in the region. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat make up the majority of plantings and are the only varieties permitted in the Alsace Grand Cru appellation. Pinot Noir (the only significant black grape variety), Pinot Blanc, Chasselas and Sylvaner also get a look in. Wines are made in all styles from sparkling and dry to the most unctuously sweet botrytised pudding wines.
