  • Goedhuis, January 2019

Clos des Chênes is Volnay’s most recognised premier cru. Thomas blends two parcels of 45 and 65 year old vines. This is quite a powerful style with firm dark berry fruits. It has substance and weight. Its elevated position means it retains excellent freshness. This is destined for fantastic longer-term ageing.

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 90-92

The 2017 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru includes 50% whole bunch fruit. It has a clean and precise bouquet, quite tight at the moment with touches of chalk filtered through the red fruit. The palate is crisp and taut with fine tannin, impressive mineralité. Not a powerful Clos des Chênes but certainly precise and lightly spiced on the finish. Good potential, but this will need patience. 2023 - 2037

  • Burghound, April 2019, Score: 89-92

A brooding and almost surly nose reluctantly reveals notes of red currant, plum, earth and a hint of herbal tea that is trimmed in just enough wood to merit mentioning. As one would reasonably expect, the broad-shouldered flavors are bigger, richer and more powerful and possess evident muscularity on the austere, serious and lingering finish that is oddly somewhat simple though that of course may well change over time. • Wine Advocate, January 2019, Score: 91-93+

The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is the most reserved of Bouley's Volnay cuvées, offering up a youthfully reticent bouquet of red fruits and flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample but firm palate that's promising but hard to read. This is a site that always need time in the barrel and bottle to show its hand, so there's nothing surprising about its shyness today.

We are delighted to introduce the wines of Thomas Bouley in 2015, joining our selection of great Volnay domaines. Those customers who bought Burgundy en primeur in the early days of Goedhuis Co may have a sense of déjà vu! Johnny first bought from Thomas’s father Jean-Marc in the 1980s. After a few years’ sabbatical it is wonderful to be reacquainted with this prestigious domaine whose wines we consider very special indeed. Much has happened in the intervening years. Son Thomas now makes the wines and is one of the Côte de Beaune’s most dedicated growers, with an unstoppable energy and enthusiasm. They have also just completed one of the area’s most sophisticated new wineries right in the heart of Volnay. This investment will ensure that the already high quality of the domaine will only ascend. This is a great estate making wines which truly reflect Volnay and Pommard.Read less

Region

Volnay

A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
