  • Goedhuis, December 2019

The Pinsons are fortunate enough to own a sizeable chunk of this renowned grand cru and it is the flagship wine of the estate. The 2018 is a gorgeous golden lemon yellow colour. Viognier-like aromas of honeysuckle and fresh apricots emanate from the glass. The palate is rich, full and intense with flavours of freshly baked croissants and almonds. This is not a shy wine, but it retains great freshness and composure, while the use of 20% new oak adds another delightful dimension. A grand cru in every way.

  • Antonio Galloni, January 2020, Score: 93-95

Pinson's 2018 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is endowed with superb textural richness and tons of sheer pedigree. Apricot, peach, dried flowers, spice and ginger add myriad shades of nuance to this super-expressive, arrestingly beautiful Clos. The 2018 starts off quietly in the glass, then builds with a crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures that is utterly captivating. Light tropical notes grace the finish in an exquisite Clos that delivers the goods.

  • Burghound, October 2019, Score: 91-93

Here the nose is much more classic in content with its notes of mineral reduction, floral, iodine and poached pear that are trimmed in soft wood. The dense and powerful large-scaled flavors possess a lovely sense of verve and ample minerality and salinity, all wrapped in an impressively persistent, balanced and relatively dry finale. Drink: 2028+

  • Decanter, November 2019, Score: 97

One of the wines of the vintage in 2018, this stunning white comes from four parcels within Chablis' most celebrated Grand Cru and is a very complete, self-assured expression of the terroir. Deftly oaked, with 20% new wood and the rest fermented and aged in stainless steel, it's a rich, saline, focused Chardonnay with jasmine and white pepper aromas, pithy, palate-cleansing acidity and layers of citrus, tangerine and aromatic spices. If only all 2018s were as refreshing and well balanced! Drinking Window 2020 – 2030

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2019, Score: 92-95

20% of the cuvee undergoes new barrel fermentation, the rest in tank and then blended to older barrel from January 2019 for 13 months in total. So the wood is clearly present but does not distract. There is great intensity, some toast for sure, which makes the finish a bit abrupt when tasted this early. The same tasted from an older barrel, offering a less aggressive nose with more white fruit, much more nuanced with good grip, maybe some wood tannins. Very long here, and super acidity.

The Pinson family vie with the Droins as one of the oldest in the town, with documents showing their presence back in 1640, while 1880 shows the first records of Louis Pinson selling bottles of their wine under the family label. It is now run by brothers Christophe and Laurent, joined by Laurent’s daughter, Charlène. The family team oversee 12 hectares of vineyards, including 2.5 hectares of Les Clos and 4.75 hectares of Mont de Milieu, from which they make extraordinarily fine and classical Chablis. They like to use oak barrels for maturation, although the influence of new oak is only ever a gentle whisper in the background of their steely wines. Their wines consistently show the raciness and elegance of fine Chablis.Read less

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
