Thomas says Caillerets is to Volnay what Les Amoureuses is to Chambolle Musigny: a grand cru in all but name. Certainly one of my favourite vineyards in the village, this is so bright, pure and intense. A strikingly controlled style with red fruit, minerality and lace-like tannins. This is so layered and yet without ostentation. Sensational.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 91-93

The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has an understated bouquet, especially for this appellation, featuring well-defined red berry, briar and light sous-bois aromas. It feels like there is some whole bunch here, but in fact there is nary a stem. The palate is framed by fine tannins and superb mineralité. Very focused, with a supple orange-peel-infused finish that fans out wonderfully. One of Thomas Bouley’s best wines. Drink 2022-2038

  • Burghound, April 2020, Score: 90-93

Spicy purple fruit aromas are set off by pretty floral nuances that include both violet and rose petal. The more refined middle weight flavors possess excellent cut and drive that carries over to the beautifully refined finish that exhibits excellent length. This almost painfully intense effort is even firmer and clearly in need of time but it's already impressive in the way that the finish really fans out as it sits on the palate. In a word, classy. Outstanding. Drink 2030+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 91-94

The first of the Volnays to be picked. Clear bright colour with a classy nose that suggests this great vineyard has resisted the heat. Liquid raspberries on the palate, nicely balanced tannins, just enough acidity, long and fine. Only 15 year old vines but they have held up very well.

We are delighted to introduce the wines of Thomas Bouley in 2015, joining our selection of great Volnay domaines. Those customers who bought Burgundy en primeur in the early days of Goedhuis Co may have a sense of déjà vu! Johnny first bought from Thomas’s father Jean-Marc in the 1980s. After a few years’ sabbatical it is wonderful to be reacquainted with this prestigious domaine whose wines we consider very special indeed. Much has happened in the intervening years. Son Thomas now makes the wines and is one of the Côte de Beaune’s most dedicated growers, with an unstoppable energy and enthusiasm. They have also just completed one of the area’s most sophisticated new wineries right in the heart of Volnay. This investment will ensure that the already high quality of the domaine will only ascend. This is a great estate making wines which truly reflect Volnay and Pommard.Read less

Region

Volnay

A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
