  • Goedhuis, November 2020

Along with 1er Cru Les Fuées this is Chambolle’s highest and coolest vineyard site. Ghislaine’s father Gaston always favoured this vineyard in years with climatic conditions like 2019. Hints of bilberry and blueberry, this has a touch of Scottish moor and heather scent to it. A very full wine which coats the mouth with a subtle weight of fruit, a very good direct freshness and long lingering finish.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 93-95

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has another compelling bouquet of intense red berry fruit laced with sous-bois, crushed rock and pressed rose petal aromas. The medium-bodied palate displays grainy tannins. One of the most structured Chambolles from the domaine and perhaps the most saline on the finish, it gets the saliva flowing and also conveys wonderful freshness. This has real gravitas. • Burghound, January 2021, Score: 92-94

Here too there is a note of poached plum to the to the spicy and quite floral-suffused aromas. In the same fashion as the best wines in the fashion, there is impressive volume to the dense and tautly muscular large-scaled flavors that brim with minerality on the austere and very tightly wound finale. This is also excellent with super development potential though extended patience will be absolutely necessary. Sweet spot Outstanding. Drink 2034+

What a stunning wine and one with superb detail and amazing grace, too. Everything that makes Barthod such a compelling proposition is here in the glass and this is a wine which follows my preferred trail through Ghislaine’s 2019s, namely BR, Village, Beaux Bruns to Les Cras – all captivating wines.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2020, Score: 91-94

Dense black with a purple rim, very dense bouquet, dark fruit, maybe some blueberries. Sweet dark fruit on the palate, a few well integrated tannins, some hillside minerals as well. Firm, concentrated, a little bit less suave than some, but with a little more tension. 9.5 barrels made. 4 Star

After attending viticultural college in Beaune in the 1980s, she began assisting her father, Gaston Barthod, at the family domaine. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach helped introduce a sorting table, extended lees contact, a gentle cold soak before fermentation, and domaine bottling. All this enabled greater control over the quality of fruit, texture of tannins, and purity of flavours. The results have been year upon year of magical masterpieces from Chambolle Musigny. Along with her partner Louis Boillot, today she is joined in the vineyard and cellar by their son, Clément.Read less

Region

Chambolle Musigny

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
