  • Goedhuis, December 2020

    The Grivot parcel of Clos Vougeot is in the lower section of this large Grand Cru. The combination of its excellent water retention and the Grivot’s skilled vineyard management certainly favoured this site in 2019. Full of bramble fruits and cranberry, with an uplifting direct intensity. A full, structured wine with a bright freshness. An excellent example of the appellation with great ageing potential.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 95-97

    The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a deep color. The beautifully defined bouquet offers blackberry, raspberry, incense and crushed stone aromas, all incredibly detailed and precise. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, perfectly pitched acidity and a structured finish that delivers good grip and a touch of black pepper on the spicy aftertaste. Seriously fine. Drink 2025 - 2050

  • Burghound, January 2021, Score: 92-94

    A much earthier, riper and more deeply pitched nose speaks of black cherry, cassis and humus nuances. There is strikingly good volume and mid-palate concentration to the dense, serious and powerful flavors that conclude in an austere, balanced, very compact and sneaky long finish. This is a big Clos de Vougeot that isn't particularly refined, but it is undeniably impressive. Drink 2036+

  • Matthew Jukes, December 2020, Score: 19++

    Warning, this is the first wine in this line-up with noticeable tannins. Of course, they all have tannin in spades, but they are hidden by the exotic fruit and yet here CdV shows active youth and tension, as it should, and this will blossom over time. Suave, layered and superbly plush, this is a superstar in 2019.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2020, Score: 94-97

    Rich dense black purple. Powerful, brooding, not over heated, sweet dark strawberry, sucrosity that is balanced by the powerful framework of properly ripe tannins. Real energy here, darkly ripe fruit, and with good length. 4 Star

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.
