  • Neal Martin, May 2021, Score: 88-90

The 2020 Château de Fonbel was picked 14-20 September for the Merlot and on 28 September for the Cabernet Franc (there is even 7% Carmenère picked on 1 October), matured in 30% new oak. It has a vivid black cherry and wild strawberry bouquet laced with iris petal. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, fresh, a little tight at the moment with quite a structured, marine-tinged finish. 2024-2034

  • Antonio Galloni, December 2022, Score: 92

The 2020 De Fonbel is bright, punchy and bursting with fruit. Sweet floral accents lift a core of red berry fruit in a soft, caressing Saint-Émilion that will drink well pretty much right out of the gate. The 2020 is an absolute delight. I imagine this charming, mid-weight Saint-Émilion will drink well for another 10-15 years. Today, it is absolutely delicious. I especially like the energy here. 2025-2035

  • Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 91

Fully 70% of the Vauthier family's 2020 Fonbel was aged in tank, and that no doubt helps to explain its appealing purity of fruit. Bursting with notes of cherries, berries, petals and anise, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and charming. Drink 2023-2035.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 16

Juicy and fruit-driven with considerable freshness. Red- and dark-fruit notes. Touch more concentration due to yield. Light but finely etched tannins. Simple but pleasing. (JL) 14% Drink 2024 – 2030

  • Neal Martin, December 2022, Score: 89

The 2020 Château de Fonbel has a pretty, if light and approachable, bouquet with brambly red fruit intermixed with blackcurrant and soft floral touches. It doesn't want to make too much of a fuss. The palate is medium-bodied with gritty tannins on the entry, a little compact at the moment yet fresh with fine salinity on the finish. Enjoy over the following decade. 2024-2034

Producer

Château de Fonbel

Owned by Alain Vauthier of renowned Château Ausone, Château de Fonbel's vineyards lie directly below those of its most illustrious neighbour. The same care is taken into its vineyard management and winemaking which is discernible in its wine style. Yet, it is a mere fraction of the price making it very good value year-in and year-out.

Region

St Emilion

South of Pomerol lies the medieval, perched village of St Emilion. Surrounding St Emilion are vines that produce round, rich and often hedonistic wines. Despite a myriad of soil types, two main ones dominate - the gravelly, limestone slopes that delve down to the valley from the plateau and the valley itself which is comprised of limestone, gravel, clay and sand. Despite St Emilion's popularity today, it was not until the 1980s to early 1990s that attention was brought to this region. Robert Parker, the famous wine critic, began reviewing their Merlot-dominated wines and giving them hefty scores. The rest is history as they say. Similar to the Médoc, there is a classification system in place which dates from 1955 and outlines several levels of quality. These include its regional appellation of St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is further divided into "A" (Ausone and Cheval Blanc) and "B" (including Angélus, Canon, Figeac and a handful of others). To ensure better accuracy, the classification is redone every 10 years enabling certain châteaux to be upgraded or downgraded depending on on the quality of their more recent vintages.
