The renowned, precipitously steep Würzgarten (spice garden) vineyard is located in the village of Ürzig. Red sandstone and slate soils give ‘the spice garden’ its characteristic spice! Loosen owns 7ha in this special vineyard, of which 3.5ha are planted on their original rootstocks, all more than 100 years old. Even just hearing the words Ürziger Würzgarten is enough to give you goose bumps a promise of wonderful things to come. From the sunny 2020 vintage, this dry Grand Cru Riesling has a spine-tingling purity and mineral saltiness. The citrus, peach and apricot fruits are pristine, mixing with fresh ginger and sweet spice. A long, intense and energetic finish.

Worldly, dynamic and charismatic, Ernst Loosen is an undeniable character. He has been at the helm of his 200-year-old family domaine since 1988. With his initiative and savoir faire, over the years he has helped re-establish the Mosel on a wider scale as one of the most exciting wine growing areas in the world. Its terroir is exceptional, composed primarily of grey-blue and red slate that climb up to tremendously steep cliffs - the steepest in the world to be exact. Due to the Middle Mosel's lack of actual soil and incredibly good drainage, most of the vines are not grafted onto American rootstocks as phylloxera cannot survive. As a result, the vines grow exceptionally slowly creating wines that tend to be wonderfully pure, tender and focused. Ernst's holdings are in the some of the most reputable vineyards.Read less
