  • James Suckling, September 2024, Score: 98

A beautifully mineral red with impeccable purity. Wet stones, red cherries and a hint of flowers and spice. Really chalky tannins with a bone-dry palate and a long, transparent finish. A combination of power and etherealness, creating perfect harmony. 100% whole bunch. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Malbec Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae is sourced from a small plot situated in Gualtallary, featuring a soil profile with a depth of one meter. It underwent a meticulous 16-month aging process in foudres and concrete vats and exhibits a dark purple hue. The nose presents enticing lavender, mint, mountain herbs, orange peel and curry aromas layered over a foundation of dried flowers. The palate offers a compelling combination of dryness and juiciness. The rich and taut mouthfeel imparts a vibrant energy that flows into a compact yet delicately lingering finish. A unique and flavorful Malbec, it marries a primary style with a terroir-driven conceptual approach. Drink 2025-2040.

Situated high in the Andean foothills of Mendoza, Bodega Catena Zapata was founded in 1902 and is the oldest Argentine winery still in family hands. Today the estate is owned by Nicolás Catena and his daughter Laura, who have both worked tirelessly together in the discovery, identification, and development of the region’s distinctive microclimate and terroir. Best known for propelling Argentinian wine into the modern era, Nicolás Catena drew much inspiration from viticulture in Bordeaux and California, and in recent years the estate has begun to focus on single vineyard wines. The family’s estate vineyards are located in the premier growing regions of Villa Bastías, Tupungato; Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo; Lunlunta, Maipu; Gualtallary, Tupungato and La Consulta, San Carlos. Lying 5,000 feet on the westernmost border of Tupungato Alto, the Adrianna Vineyard has been described as South America’s Grand Cru, lauded for its outstanding single parcel Chardonnay wines – White Bones and White Stones. Named after the former Decanter Man of the Year, Nicolás Catena Zapata is Argentina’s first Grand Vin, and is made from massale selections of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, which no longer exist in Europe.Read less

Region

Mendoza

Mendoza is the largest viticultural region in Argentina, located in the west of Argentina around the city of the same name. The region accounts for more than two-thirds of the country's total wineproduction, which focuses on red wine production. Malbec is the most important grape variety but Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, among many others, are also grown. Central Mendoza has the longest tradition for fine wine production as the climate is temperate and the soils are unusually gravelly for Argentina as elsewhere in Mendoza soils are typically alluvial and sandy.
