Today the estate is owned by Nicolás Catena and his daughter Laura, who have both worked tirelessly together in the discovery, identification, and development of the region’s distinctive microclimate and terroir. Best known for propelling Argentinian wine into the modern era, Nicolás Catena drew much inspiration from viticulture in Bordeaux and California, and in recent years the estate has begun to focus on single vineyard wines. The family’s estate vineyards are located in the premier growing regions of Villa Bastías, Tupungato; Agrelo, Lujan de Cuyo; Lunlunta, Maipu; Gualtallary, Tupungato and La Consulta, San Carlos. Lying 5,000 feet on the westernmost border of Tupungato Alto, the Adrianna Vineyard has been described as South America’s Grand Cru, lauded for its outstanding single parcel Chardonnay wines – White Bones and White Stones. Named after the former Decanter Man of the Year, Nicolás Catena Zapata is Argentina’s first Grand Vin, and is made from massale selections of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, which no longer exist in Europe.Read less
