  • Goedhuis, April 2022, Score: 94-96

With aromas of damson and spring flowers, this fine Pomerol with 95% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc balances its enticing refinement with ample volume and generosity. This is a very fine quality wine, graceful and harmonious. An excellent sweetness of fruit, hints of Moroccan spice and roasted almond, extremely rewarding on the finish.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2022, Score: 93-95

The 2021 La Fleur-Pétrus is a regal, elegant wine. Rich and sumptuous, yet classically medium in body, the 2021 is impeccably balanced from start to finish. A rush of red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint, blood orange and cinnamon build into the exquisite, layered finish. The 2021 reinforces my view that La Fleur-Pétrus is the wine to focus on in the Moueix range. Hosanna and, especially Trotanoy, are more famous, to be sure, but in 2021 those wines are heavily shaped by the growing conditions of the year, while La Fleur-Pétrus is simply La Fleur-Pétrus. Classic Pomerol as far as I am concerned. Drink 2029-2041

  • Wine Advocate, April 2022, Score: 91-94

The 2021 La Fleur-Pétrus is performing nicely, exhibiting aromas of plums, cherries, sweet soil tones, loamy soil and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless palate that's lively and charming. Classically proportioned and nicely balanced, if it takes on additional depth with élevage, I'd expect it to land at the upper end of my bracketed score.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2022, Score: 18.5

This is yet another fabulous LFP, and it shows traction and discreet power and stunning carpentry over a luxurious, velvety core of fruit. The nose is pure hedonism with a more exotic feel than many of the super-pure wines in 2021. It is almost like 2021 meets a 2020 and shakes hands in the middle. The finish is prodigious, and this serves to lengthen the red and black fruit notes so much that you can meet them all, neatly lined up for inspection. The back end is tense but not astringent, and I imagine that after a decade or so, this will be fully up to speed and knocking people out with its superb array of flavours.

  • Wine Cellar Insider, April 2022, Score: 93-95

Deep garnet in color, the wine opens with flowers, chocolate, truffles, licorice, espresso, dark plums and red pit fruits. Plush, soft and polished on the palate, with supple-textured, silky fruits in the elegant and almost flamboyant, sensuous finish. This is really quite strong, especially when you consider the difficulties in the vintage. The harvest took place September 23 - October 6. Drink from 2025-2049.

  • Jane Anson, April 2022, Score: 95

Subdued on the first nose, this is well constructed, and takes its time to unroll. Violet and gunsmoke emerge first, followed by tons of blackberry and redcurrant fruit, cocoa bean, smoked liquorice, earth and black truffles. Successful, gorgeous silky texture, less exuberant than the past few years but nuanced, seductive, overperforms the vintage and is extremely easy to recommend. One to look out for. September 23 to October 6 harvest.

Completely replanted in 1956 after the devastating frosts with 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the wine produced here is lighter than its stablemates, but is highly regarded for its suppleness. The wines are aged for 20 months in one third new oak barrels each vintage. Maturing quite quickly, La-Fleur Petrus can usually be enjoyed after just five or six years. Christian Moueix's drive towards increasing quality is illustrated by his more rigorous selection and by his purchase of old vines from Ch.Le Gay.Read less

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
