  • James Halliday, April 2022, Score: 93

Lime blossom, coriander, hints of lychee and green apple. This is firmer and leaner than the previous vintage, showing the impact both of the Indian Ocean (the acid line is like a spray of sea) and the cooler season. The finish is littered with a suggestion of exotic spice, including galangal, kaffir leaf and sesame seed. Drink 2022-2027.

In 1980, inspired by the emblematic wines of Mouton Rothschild, Leeuwin Estate launched its own much-loved collection of super-premium labels, the ‘Art Series’. Representing the most opulent and age-worthy of all of Leeuwin’s stock, the ‘Art Series’ features magnificent artwork from contemporary Australian artists, carefully chosen each year by the family. Described by Vinous’ Josh Raynolds as ‘long-time collectibles…having developed a solid reputation for age-worthiness’, the Art Series is what makes the Leeuwin Estate one of the top names in Australia, and rightly so. If you haven’t tried these wines before then we urge you to put some in your cellar.Read less

Region

Margaret River

Certainly the best wine area in Western Australia, if not the whole country. The idyllic scenery of Margaret River (surf-lapped rocky coast, towering karri forest, abundant wildlife) has only been home to wine production since the 1970s. Hard to believe given the quality of the Chardonnays and Cabernets produced by the likes of Leeuwin, Cullen, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix. Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon all also thrive here. The climate is mild, tempered by the Indian Ocean and the drying wind known as the Freemantle Doctor, and infertile red loam soils are the most sought after for viticulture.
