  • Goedhuis, January 2024

William Fèvre owns 47 hectares over 40 different sites within the appellation. A maximum of 10% of the blend is barrel fermented, crafting a Chablis with charm and appeal. Gentle lemon colour, a floral nose of rose petal and white flowers, the palate has an appealing appellational zip of acidity. Lively and fresh, with some sappy depth on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, September 2023, Score: 88-90

The 2022 Chablis Village, due for certification with the 2023 vintage, has a steely nose with touches of lime and apple blossom. The palate is well-balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Quite classic and cool in style. A bit short, though, with sufficient salinity to keep the saliva flowing. Fine. (Drinking 2024-2032)

  • Burghound, October 2023, Score: 89-91

There is slightly better Chablis typicity present on the aromas of mineral reduction, iodine and cool white fleshed fruit. There is also slightly better volume and richness to the delicious medium weight flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension, all wrapped in a refreshing, clean, dry and sleek finale. This is very good for its level plus it should reward a few years of keeping if desired. Drink 2026+

  • Decanter, December 2023, Score: 93

Distinct shellfish notes. Plenty of volume, a fleshy sunny character on the palate, freshened by lingering salinity to finish. Top example of AP Chablis in 2022. From 40ha of vines, with three distinct plots, including one from a lovely vineyard to the east around Viviers, with vines planted in the 1960s, but all of the vines have plenty of age.

  • Jasper Morris MW, June 2023, Score: 89-92

5 Star Wine. The average age is 40 year old vines, and 10% in wood. Excellent long finish. Sources are Chablis and Chichée for half and the rest in Viviers, 50 year old vines. Well drained steep slope which though south facing is at altitude and stays fresh. A fresh lemon yellow. The nose is a little more subdued than the Petit Chablis but more classical. This too has the attractive saline bitterness of extreme youth, but the fruit builds beautifully on the palate. Drink from 2025-2030. Tasted: June 2023

William Fèvre is one of the great names of Chablis, however, in comparison to many estates in the region, William himself was a relative newcomer. He produced his first crop in 1959 and swiftly built up the estate to have substantial holdings in the town of Chablis. By 1998, the year that Champagne legend Joseph Henriot purchased the domaine, it had grown to 48 hectares. During his life, Joseph Henriot further expanded the estate, so today it owns 78 hectares of vineyards, including 16 hectares of 1ers Crus and 15 hectares of Grands Crus. Under the careful direction of technical director Didier Séguier, William Fèvre is a superb example of how big can be beautiful. The vineyard management for the village wines is organic and the 1ers Crus and Grands Crus vineyards have been biodynamic since 2020. Ensuring his wines embody true terroir style is hugely important to Didier. He avoids new oak for ageing and counts his blessings that sister winery, Bouchard Père Fils in Beaune, is an unlimited source of 2–5-year casks for maturation of his Chablis.Read less

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
